Very Cool

I love being the lone violinist on the blog :) Found this while looking for stroh violins. It's a player piano with a mechanical violin in it. Very strange.

So I was watching Wall-E today

... and I thought to myself, as I saw the fat people mentally plugged into their screens and talking with each other and all that fun stuff that maybe Disney was doing a bit of social satire on our current wired culture.

But then I thought maybe they were overtly mocking my addiction to Facebook... sad.

Who Was Joseph Campbell?

Well, this should give you an idea.

Also, this is funny.

update

"How do you work this thing again?"

Well, we've made some progress on Jingles3la; we have the exposition scene with Ralph and Jingles filmed as well as a flashbach of Jingles' training with the Prophet Rastafar. So that much less remains! Stay tuned for further updates and for scripts of necessary vloggage or for scheduling attempts.

May I announce

Weber State University's football team is 5-0 in conference play. We won in Flagstaff today which means we go to the playoffs. I got to go with the band this time which was really cool. Hopefully I get to go if they travel again.

Northern Arizona... city of flagstaff is OK as cities go, not quite as interesting as Boulder... NAU facilities really nice (indoor football field... cool)... Northern Arizona geographically: really, really boring. Like southern Utah. Although caught just glimpses of the Grand Canyon walls, which reminded me of God's Window and the escarpment in Nelspruit (S.A.). Oh and the big shiny hydroelectric dam which forms Lake Powell is amazing too.

Random thought to the world

It's been a LONG time since I've blogged on here. So, I had a random thought come to mind and thought I would share it with you all.
So, here is my thought/question.
Has anyone ever thought about or done any kind of work/research on how weather affects musical instruments? And...if so, done anything about it to seriously educate musicians out there? I think I will make it my duty to become the first meteorologist with specialties in providing reports for musicians.
For example:
Monday- We will be expecting a cold front to come in from the south. Reed instruments, break out the harder reeds and prepare for your instrument to be a pain in the neck. Strings, your fingers will be colder, so wear gloves at all possible times and keep your fingers moving! And, be prepared for breaking strings. Etc....

Anyways...yay for random thought!

Posting

for no purpose other than posting.

Erik Satie's daily schedule:
An artist must regulate his life. Here then is the precise schedule of my daily activities.
I get up at 7:18 a.m. I am inspired from 10:23 to 11:47. I have lunch at 12:11 and leave the table at 12:14.
A ride on my horse for my health's sake, at the rear of my estate, from 1:19 p.m. until 2:53. Another bout of inspiration from 3:12 to 4:07.
Different Occupations (fencing, reflection, immobility, visiting, contemplation, dexterity, swimming, etc.) from 4:21 to 6:47.
Dinner is served at 7:16 and over at 7:20. Then come symphonic readings (aloud) from 8:09 until 9:59.
My bedtime is regularly at 10:37. Every week I awaken with a start at 3:19 a.m. (Tuesdays).
I only eat white foods: eggs, sugar, ground bone, the fat of dead animals, veal, salt, coconuts, chicken boiled in white water; fruit mold, rice, turnips, bleached pudding, dough, cheese (white), cotton salad, and certain kins of fish (without skin).
I have my wine boiled, and drink it cold with fuchsia juice. I have a good appetite, but I never speak while eating for fear of choking.
I breathe carefully (a little at a time). I dance very rarely. When walking I hold my sides and look straight behind me.
Very serious in demeanor, if I laugh it is without meaning to. I apologize all the time and quite affably.
I only close one eye when sleeping; my sleep is very sound. My bed is round, with a hole provided for putting the head through. Every hour my servant takes my temperature and gives me another.
I am a longtime subscriber to a fashion magazine. I wear a white hat, white stockings, and a white vest.
My doctor has always told me to smoke. To this advice he adds, "Smoke, my friend. If you don't, someone else will smoke in your place."

The Awesome Ness Monster strikes again.

So there is free middle-eastern food this Thursday at the Union Building, 6-9 pm. Of course, this coincides with Tanner Holst's and my birthday. So come get free food and visit in the computer lab.

You're also welcome to come for a little entertainment Friday night at Jon's house.

Stunt Driving

Well, that was some impressive riding by those Italian motorcycle cops. I mean, before anyone goes thinking that's not dangerous, consider that while those aren't really big bikes, they look like they probably weigh between 250 and 300 lbs. I've dropped a bike that heavy and you don't just pick it back up quickly. Now, check out what our own boys in blue can do, not with little Eurobikes, but with 900lb Harley-Davidson Road Kings and Dynaglides.

jingles is potentially hazardous to your health and wellbeing.

Outside of the obvious side affects to filming jingles-like going crazy, permanently taking on one's character, or simply spending too much time with Jarrett, there is the ever-looming threat of being mowed over by a large truck.

It's that time again

Band camp started this week. So there are quotes happening.

#1. an exchange:
tuba: "Wow! That's like the future of chalk!"
Torie: "Yeah, I got it from my Grandma."
euph: "It's like, the past of chalk!"

AND THE ROOT:
"Don't play it like you're taking vitamins."
"It's like a Christmas tree - what presents do I open and which do I leave alone?"

One Six Left

Okay, I admit I'm a geek. I'm not just a band geek or a computer geek. No, I also like flying and this is some seriously sick flying footage!! You can't tell me that wouldn't be a lot of fun! I've done a bit of that stuff, but only in a humble Cessna 172. Oh, and who can forget the flying tips!

Chao!

Actually... why don't all the interested people email me their contact numbers so I can make an even betterer plan too.

A 100% Band Hall Quote

"It smells like Ninja Turtles in here."
-Ben Chadwick (3:31 pm in the band hall!)

RSVPing for Jingles on Monday

As I can't post on the IIIla page, I'll post it here.... I should be to the Browning Center tomorrow, around 10 AM, (well, actually, later today) with some props that might come in useful... namely a baby (should you choose to delve into Jingle's past to find out why he's now a pi-rat) and costumes consisting of Big black pirate pants (good with or without boots), knee high pirate boots (if anyone can fit into them). a white renaissance shirt, some wench-wear(includes two skirts, a corsette, a chemise & a vest, skirt thingy, both of which look really cool with the pants!), a couple ren-belts and belt-loops (black and brown) a sword/sheath/frog, a couple cheap rapiers, a black jedi cloak (technically a sith cloak, long enough for someone up to 6 foot 2), and a set or red jedi tabbards/belt and brown jedi tabbards & belt. Possibly my cheap brown jedi cloak, maybe a green ren shirt. Also, a nice piratey looking shirt and pants for the baby, just in case. I do have jackalope booties too... And a longbow without a string....
So there it is, hopefully with this advance warning you might be able to think of a way to utilize some of it, should you choose to do so. I'm happy to leave everything there (except of course, the baby) for use in later filming as well so long as it is all returned. :)

not mine - but an unfortunate discovery...

So it turns out that "presbyterians" is made of the same letters as "britney spears"

Apologies to the presbyterians

Methinks...

Well, Jon, you suggested the "watch for tanks" sign in tianamen (yes, a word I am probably incapable of spelling) square; I thought this, which I found on a blog linked to John Mackey's blog, was apt.

Protests

Mike: I oppose this war, and I have decided that I am going to eat a delicious, crispy Kit Kat for every day that it continues! Bring the troops home! *munch*
Me: Each of these Skittles represents an Afghan orphan!
Mike: This 7 day protest-cruise may appear to be a wonderful tropical vacation, but each morning at the buffet I weep for those brave Americans suffering from PTSD. And the number is constantly growing. Ooh, shrimp! I mean...*sob*
Me: Spa Sit-In Continues: organizers demand a pedicure to symbolize each amputee.
Mike: Today we stand together against the murder of animals for vanity, as we buy up all of these gorgeous, luxurious furs on sale for 50% off!
Me: We refuse all Chinese food until the brave people of Tibet are afforded their God-given freedom. Until then, sushi!
Mike: I will remain locked here in this luxury penthouse suite with only room-service to sustain me until the unlawfully imprisoned members of the Falun Gong are released.
Me: These brave men pledge to smoke a Cuban cigar every day until the prisoners at Guantanamo are released!

Less serious than my senior recital

is my band playing at Roy Days this weekend. Friday night from 7:30 until 9:30 is Classic Cheatwood, which means we'll be playing some songs you might be familiar with. Also, the group starting at 6 is pretty good too.
Saturday night from 6-8 is Cheatwood. This means that we'll be playing mostly originals, really jamming, dancy, and well-played music with some covers thrown in.
Bring a friend, date, nephew, niece, uncle, aunt, or anyone else you know or even don't know.
It will be rockin.
Cheers.

The Dark Knight

I give it a solid ***** out of five. Great great movie, and my personal favorite of the year. Heath Ledger is wonderful in it. I'm feeling to lazy to write anything else.

Andrew especially (being our resident expert) but also anyone else who has seen it, what's your opinion of Dark Knight?

Send it to theKobus at google mail commune.
Thence I will be able to connect you with the new blog and the google doc we're using to outline it.

Another Update

There's a full moon this friday night and so of course there's a hike in the works. I think it'd be way cool to do Mt. Ogden from the Snowbasin side (just a matter of ensuring we don't get gated in) as the light will be really strong there - the trail is quite wide and exposed, only about 4.5 miles, &c. Now hiking the east face means we can start earlier, around 6 or 6:30 we can meet up at the VBC and head out. I know that freaky people sometimes go up to snowbasin rd. on friday nights but I figure if we're actually on the trail (yes, cue Ferde Grofé) we'll have no trouble. As of now the weather is supposed to be good.

So that is my plan and I invite all interested parties to join me.

Alcohol

Alcohol turns normally good people into raving lunatics. I hate it when people drink!!! If you wish to know more about this, email me at either jason[dot]schill[at]gmail[dot]commando or jason[at]schillclan[dot]network. It's a great story.

Kristin and I would like to somehow be involved this time in Jingles3la. As I remember, we were not able to be involved in JinglesIIla because we were getting hitched. Well, the hitching has been done and the sequel has been released. So, if there is anything we can do to be involved, please let us know. I'm not sure if we will be in attendence at the fireworks show on the 13th, but I think it would be fun to help out anyway.

The Awesome Ness Monster Strikes Again

So here's the current plan. I think just about everybody is going to be at the lindquist plaza (read: "duck pond") concert and fireworks, given how many are playing at it; and so I suggest:
-that a Jingles3la meeting be held then and there, between the fireside and concert, with games and snacks of course - and possibly somebody's laptop and DVDs to catch up those who don't know Jinglesthula.
-that a camera be brought because a free crowd scene with fireworks is a beautiful and useful thing. I mean, we could do anything with that.
-also, that a few simple props be around
-that we feed Matt Kinney 100% nut-free cookies.
-that this great opportunity not be missed.
My usual statement will be repeated: I plan on being very close to the seating area for the concert; look for either a South African flag or the Jingly Roger flying proudly. Or listen for the sound of didgeridoos. Whatever.

Also for anybody interested we're gonna busk in SLC on saturday night - it's the Jazz festival - probably on 4th south someplace.

Well now

You see, Andrew, had you checked the blog a week ago you would have seen the announcements.
Coming to Corps Encore? Of course we'd love to have you on the project. The more the merrier. You want to be a villain again? Jon, give me a list of emails of those who post on the blog so the notifications and access to the new jingles3la blog can be more universal.
There are two possibilities. One, we have a meeting after (during?) Corps Encore - I guess that's tomorrow; or this Saturday night (at Jon's or the planetarium); or Sunday afternoon while waiting for the fireworks show &c &c. If you can (this goes for everybody) attend any such events and we will begin the process.

Andrew, email me your contact info - theKobus at gmail dot communal. I will see to it you're informed. Heck, we'll inform you of other stuff too. You're a citizen of the Band Hall, it's time to exercise those rights!

Tuesday, July 08, 2008

For serious?

Not Another Jingles Movie will be filming in a neighborhood near me and I wasn't invited to the par-tay?

Having successfully completed my film degree some time ago, and substantially honing my craft in the past while, I think I might make a valuable contribution to Jingles Part Trois. I would LOVE to be involved in some small way at least! Seeing how much fun we had with the previous incarnation and all...

BK recording tonight, Troopers tomorrow

If anybody is interested, the Blue Knights will be recording tonight at the stadium using the IsoMike and the Troopers will be there tomorrow. Actually, if I remember right, they do it around dusk, before the lights come on in the stadium so that there is no buzz but I don't know the exact time they'll be doing it. I heard that they let people sit in the stands during the recording that BK did last year so I don't see why it would be any different this year but if you go and they don't let you in, I'm sorry.

Also, the Blue Knights are currently over at Roy High. Usually all drum corps rehearsals are open rehearsals but every once in a while, there is a closed one. But from what I heard from the dad of a kid in BK, it's an open rehearsal.

Toooooooo much

Don't get me wrong, violin is an super awesomely cool instrument to play, but these guys are trying way too hard to make the violin look cool. Cage dancing in the desert? Moshing? Oriental lady wearing fake dreadlocks surrounded by real Jamaicans dancing on the hood of an oriental car? And that's the first two minutes. Oy. It like every MTV video ever made. Combined into one. With solo violin. I'm sorry. Violin is not MTV. It just isn't.

Have some

cake

Yup, it's true!

Saturday, July 5th, there will be festivities at Jon's pad.

Thus far, there will be the watching of a live drum corps webcast from Stanford, CA (which starts at 6:30 p.m. in CA so 7:30 here) as well as watching whatever other drum corps shows we want to get us hyped for Corps Encore. Oh and I do mean whatever shows we want! I signed up for the DCI Fan Network which has streaming video of all the top 12 drum corps from 1975 to 2006 plus a ton of other features. Plus, from what it sounds like in Jarrett's post, there will also be the hazing of some Band Hall newbies.... excuse me, we will be "indoctrinating" some newer Band Hall citizens. Should be tons-o-fun!

Plan on it starting at 6 p.m. Jon and I talked earlier today and suggested pizza (just like $5 pizza from Little Caesars) and snacks. Jon said that he'd provide the drinks. If ya got any questions, you can ask either Jon or myself and maybe Jarrett?

Jon, I forgot to ask... Where is your place? I've never been.

EVENT

So...
In addition to the hike scheduled for this friday at 6 pm - which apparently is to include a reading of the constitution and declaration of independence as we go up (ummm...)
hee hee.

Saturday, 5 july is a good time for an evening get-together of some kind. No less an authority than Jingles the Pirate himself told me so and also informed me that other(s) had suggested getting together to watch drum corps videos in order to get warmed up for Corps Encore on Thursday the 10th. I also am attempting to assemble a cadre of Band Hall citizens to be indoctrinated in the glorious traditions and lore of the Band Hall, i.e. Jinglesþula. Jon has suggested his place as a facility (though I don't mean to speak for him!) which would be good... hmm.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

And suddenly I am reminded of Dave Cox

and his classic joke...

How many trumpet players does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Five.

One to change the bulb, and four to stand around the room and say,
"Sure he's good, but I could do it higher and faster."

Oh and I think that Julius von bismarck is the crazy Berliner I heard once (on TV) say he was trying to get people to accept "the dictatorship of art - because art is the only lovely dictatorship."

I could be wrong but it fits the behavior

Ricky, that sounds strangely like the Tastee Bros. Those punks! They let their site expire and now I can only refer you to the one on Archive.org. I do have some recordings of the Tastee Bros if you really, really, really want them. :)

I can ride my bike again, yaaay!! Hooray for fuel savings!

Oh, shoot!

I know it's June but this is still pretty good.....

So Tuba Christmas is a great event that quite a few tuba and euph. players look forward to each year. They gather in masses every year to play Christmas carols and to just have a good time playing some low, soothing tunes.

But some people ask, "why isn't there a (insert instrument here) Christmas?"

This is why.....

Enjoy?...... Well, try to anyways.....

Monday, June 23, 2008

Event Notice

Well for any of you that be interested, there's a hike in the works. It's an alternative 4th of july activity: the plan is to hike Malan's peak (a fairly gentle hike) in the evening so as to be able to see all 8 or so major fireworks shows at once. So we're leaving the browning center at 6 pm, from the W lot, and all are welcome to join us. If you wish to have access to the games/events calendar, just email Jon or I and we'll get you in on the action!

Otherwise, you have absolutely no excuse to have anything less than a great day.

Fun with l'Gogle

I found another eccentric Jarrett.
I advise you to check out the fake and faker bios.

I don't have to know them. It's better if I don't. But there are a few out there and they do their thing, usually very well.

Hello all....

Why hello to all.... It seems as though another year of marching is upon us. I find myself this year in quite the interesting position. Being the assistant director at Roy HS I now find myself in more administrative and overseeing tasks than hands on teaching and running of the band. Not sure he chose the right guy for this, but I guess we'll see.

For y'alls info, Roy HS has acquired all-new uniforms. We will hopefully be debuting these beauts at either the 24th parade or Roy days. So make sure you catch the train.

I know I'm a geek cuz all I ever talk about are computers, band or my family, cuz my kids are quite adorable.

I miss being up there with you guys. Ah, the memories!

Feel free to contact me jeffry (dot) s (dot) johnson (at) gmail (dot) com

Later y'alls!

I vote yes

As you all knew I would to a large group of geeks en masse, seeing The Dark Knight. I also vote we see it at the Junction seeing as how you can reserve your seats. Hence, we can all sit together in a collective group of geeks. We are less easy to infiltrate in numbers. I will be seeing it with or with out all y'alls* and be prepared for me to be wearing my Batcape.

Check y'alls* later!

*Not sure why I keep referring to you as y'alls, I'm neither from the south or a the hills....meh.

YES!!!

to the Dark Knight!

That's it for me. later.

Well hello

Hey Andrew - good to see you. No, the band hall has not caught fire to my knowledge. But I hear they are taking out the carpet and putting tile or laminate flooring down or something like that.

Hey we should all go see the Dark Knight together, eh? July 17, I think.

Congratulamationings, and welcome to the globe

To the newest of the Schill clan, may your stay on this bouncing ball be filled with experiences that are worth having. To the founding members of the group, I say well done and very high fives. Yes, Jason, I was looking forward to that elite post number as well after Jarrett mentioned the palindrome posting.

Riddle (for those who haven't walked along the darkened corridors of the Browning Center recently): What do you call a camel with one hump and two heads, one at either end?

Answer: A palindromedary

Oh, and just in case...

May 21st

May 21st was a great day for me! Well, it was great for Kristin and me. We had the distinct privilege of welcoming our son, Jayden, into the world! I don't have a whole lot to say other than I am so happy and so overwhelmed all at the same time. I will continue to post more images as I get a chance to shrink them from 8.3MP to a more manageable, Internet-friendly size.

In other news, with all the relative downtime this weekend, I have been able to get my email server up and running. It's kind of a headache setting up a mail server, but I got it running!

Chao!

ps: I passed the 1337 (LEET) post and made this one the 1338 (LEEB) post. :) I don't know if that's better or not.

your mission

should you be able to write latin fluently...

oh my

there are only a few things that frighten me: Jung, junior high schools, llamas, and people who play scrabble in latin.

Should you choose to accept it...

Your mission is to check out GPS Mission. If you have one of the supported devices, try out the one I created.

For those of you who don't want to jump and read, here's the skinny. You have a GPS enabled phone (or phone with GPS device attached). You download the game software. You select a mission. You go to the various checkpoints, following the clues. There are riddles and gold to collect along the way and photo tasks. It's fun. Probably.

You should try it out. Even create local missions for others to play.

Tra la la.

Narnia 2. Verdict: not bad

My roommate thinks that Obama could beat McCain, but Hillary couldn't. I get the feeling Obama will win the nomination by a bit, but since Hillary scares me, maybe she should win the nomination and lose the election.

Ah.... glorious politicking season. Perhaps I should register to vote.

Thought of the day: Just because your clothing is flammable and fire is, itself, quite nifty, that does not mean you should light yourself on fire.

This, for your entertainment (from _why, who, it seems, has multiple imaginations):

A couple interesting things I've been meaning to post for a while. Jarrett always proclaims Obama as a rock star. He has been on the cover of Rolling Stone, and other magazines, and now this:

Wow. This is the image that you can get printed on a t shirt from Ebay.

This just makes me cringe:

Quintessential Cad

So I saw Don Giovani last night. Fair enough.

But when I awoke this morning (and my subconscious must have been working on this all the while I slept) my thought was, "Smooth Criminal is a direct steal from the opening scene."

Donna Anna are you okay?
are you okay?
are you okay Donna Anna?

The lyrics even mention a crecendo and include the phrase "Dad Gone"

I rest my case.

I NEED TO BE JUDGED!...Er, I need a judge

Next Saturday (May 17th) I am hosting a middle school music festival. I am desperately looking for another judge to help out. This isn't anything official and you don't need a teaching license or anything. I just need somebody who is an instrumentalist (preferably a music major), and can give some middle school band and orchestra groups some tips and pointers. The festival runs from 8:00am - 11:40 am at Ben Lomond High School. Your role would be to listen to the music groups perform a few numbers and then go on stage and give them your feedback of what they are doing good and what they can work on. You would of course be compensated for your time (about $60). Please e-mail me if you are interested at jensenc at ogdensd dot org. Thanks! - Cory Jensen

Cabinet?

I knew you'd figure it out; I guess the most you can hope for is Secretary of State or something.

Oh wait

I'm an idiot. I've known for years that you have to be 35 to be president. Duh.
In case anyone else is wondering, the fee is fairly hefty - from 500 - 1600 dollars - to be a candidate for elected office.

The Best Bass Player

Notes from the clinic:

If music is a language, we teach it differently than we teach the spoken language. We should teach music the same way we teach English.

If music is a language, have something to say.

The instrument is not the point, it's the music, and the music is in us, not the instrument. Otherwise musicians wouldn't be needed.

Here's what I was able to get of it. There was nothing that said the session was copyrighted, so I'm proceeding on the assumption that you can all enjoy this guilt-free. I was using Audacity and typing at the same time, so that's the occasional clickety-clicking you hear.

Oh, yes. To respond to questions, Haloscan is what is giving us the nice little post ratings (out of 5 stars) and the comments and trackbacks and live polls.

Street View

Just in case you haven't explored this yet, Google has a fairly new design in the works called streetview. It contains 360 degree eye-level images of most streets. It is incredible! There is a car that drives all around with a 360 degree camera which is linked to GPS and takes snapshots of all of the streets around. They aren't done yet, but they have a good chunk of them finished. Go explore and see what you can see!

I heard about this from Sizwe in Bloemfontein and I'm ever so delighted to find it

well . . .

Who am I?  I am a pianist, and apparently I look like Franz Liszt (ask Jarrett).  I play the piano in Wind Ensemble and when there's no piano parts I play percussion.  I'm NOT one of those back-up percussionists who aren't really percussionists.

Do I know you?  Um, I don't think so, Jason.  How sad.

I think I will ignore the third question, as I don't pay for car insurance.

As for Dr. Palumbo for president, it was sort of Jarrett's idea, really.  I said to vote for a write in candidate if you didn't like any of the options, and he all of a sudden really wanted to vote for Dr. Palumbo.  I tried to see if it was possible, and apparently it's not without committing fraud.  It would have been funny to see the look on his face when he found out people voted for him to be president though . . .

Bienvenidos Abordo

Para su seguridad, permanezca sentado y mantenga las manos, brazos, pies y piernas dentro del tren. Y cuide a sus pequenitos.

Welcome, Sharon! Now, I have one question for you: Who are you? Do I... Okay, two questions: Who are you? Do I know you? And... Three! Three questions: Who are you? Do I know you? And how much are you saving on car insurance? Okay, that last question really didn't have anything to do with anything else, but I had to throw it in there because, as everyone knows, lists come in threes.

Also, I'm with Cory. Eh, what do Dr. Palumbo and autoinscribing (don't know if that's a word) for public office have to do with each other?

Oh how rude of me. Sharon, my name is Jason and I was in the WSU band for many years, but have not been actively participating in it since fall of 2004 (something about needing to graduate.) Occasionally, however, I do come back for alumni functions.

Jon, what is Haloscan? Does it have anything to do with Halo/2/3?

Anyhow, I'll chat with y'all later! It's time for dinner!

President Palumbo?

Sharon - welcome to the blog. I'm a little confused about your connection of running for office and Dr. Palumbo. Can you fill me in?

Straw Poll

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

On the subject of presidential candidates

To become a valid write-in candidate for a state or federal office, an individual must file a Declaration of Write-In Candidacy no later than 30 days before the regular general election.

Federal office candidates must file the declaration in person with the Lt. Governor's Office.  State office candidates may file the declaration in person either with the county clerk in their county of residence or with the Lt. Governor's Office.  Write-in candidates must meet the qualifications required for the state or federal office they are seeking. Filing the Declaration of Write-In Candidacy means that write-in votes for the candidate will be counted.  The candidate's name will not appear on the ballot.

Good Luck getting Dr. Palumbo to do THAT

I think there is some kind of fee, too, but the whole in-person thing sort of wrecks the idea (unless someone were to pose as him for the interview, which I DON'T suggest).

Not too shabby

I just got back from the DCI countdown broadcast at Cinemark Theaters. It was a pretty good compilation of shows. I was particularly excited about the preview of the Blue Devils for this coming season. They will be using some mini/marchable Taiko drums in their show. It looks to be a great year!

A Hitler-Youth Propganda song

that never was, and never will be.
to the tune of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (which is obvious)

I'm a Nazi doodle dandy,
Nazi doodle do or die;
A true and proud son of the Fatherland,
I'll be the pride of the Reich.
I've got a Nazi doodle sweetheart -
Thus the Master Race will trhive!
Deutschland, Deutschland, Ãœber Alles,
Alles in der Welt,
I'm a Nazi doodle boy!

and Jarrett has done it again

It's beginning to look

a lot like Christmas. I think I'm about tired of snow for this year.

Ricky, I would so be there but I have new american tonight and I've already missed a rehersal and can't miss any more. :( Everybody else - go! Enjoy it for me.

Anyone going?

Just curious but is anybody going to the DCI Countdown tomorrow night? If so, which one are you going to? I'll be in Layton. Hopefully I'll see some of you there!

This Is a Great Country

Hello, one and everyone. You are all cordially invited to come see myself and Beth and the choirs and folkdancers from the Institute in the spring variety show. The last show is this evening at 7:30 at the Browning Center (Austad). I totally get to wear an officer's uniform and fight the urge to march marching band style during the Armed Forces Salute medley. Sorry about the short notice. It's a great patriotic show, though, and you should totally come. Ok, bye.

Geek + Music

Whenever music and geeks get together it is beautiful. Here's something that M$ is doing do allow the musically challenged of the world prove that they are. It's called MySong. Props on the deli jingle. The end credits tune isn't bad either.

Thanks for the heads up, Ricky. I'm way excited about both Phantom and VK. I'd heard they re-incorporated. The last (and only) show I saw them play live was their Magical Mystery Tour in Space. 'Twas awesome. Everybody: go!

Update:
And speaking of geek, did you know that there's a website that has surpassed youTube for daily video uploads, and is second only to iTunes for online song purchases? Surprise - it's a South Korean website. It's a social networking site that between 25% and 40% of that countries population is a part of. The world wide web, eh?

metaplace looks interesting.

Also, I've added amung.us widgets to the sidebar so you can better visualize the arid winds sweeping tumbleweeds lazily across the blog.

Update Again:

You may enjoy this offering of a new way to look at books.

Corps Encore!!!!

Just wanted to let everybody know that Corps Encore tickets are on sale! Click here for details on the event. The show is July 10th and tickets on the 50 yard line are $25 a piece and go down from there the closer to the end zones you get. I'm planning on buying my tickets within the next couple of weeks. The line up looks pretty good and is as follows:

Blue Devils
Blue Knights
Phantom Regiment
Spokane Thunder
Troopers
Velvet Knights

Should be a good show and good fun! Also, this is very tentative but I've been thinking about doing a little road trip. I was thinking about going to the Boise, ID show on July 9th, the Ogden show on July 10th and the Denver, CO show on the 12th. For me, the main reason to do this is to see Phantom 3 times but the other reason is that Santa Clara Vanguard will be at the Boise show and The Cavaliers and Madison Scouts will be at the Denver show.

later.

I'm goin'!!!

I'm going not only because my 06 show was one of the shows chosen but also because the person that I asked to go with me to last years Countdown couldn't make it but lucky for me, she can go this time!

What's funny about the Countdown this time is how many theaters it's playing at. The first year it wasn't even in Utah, the next year I believe it was down in West Jordan and last year it was in Ogden. Now it's showing in Ogden, Layton, SLC, Sandy and West Jordan.... Since I've gone to both the Ogden and West Jordan ones, I'm planning on going to the one in Layton. Hopefully I'll see some of ya there!

Also, there are some concerts coming up. There is a chamber music concert featuring the freshman honors quintets coming up on April 11th at 7:30pm. This will include a woodwind and brass quintet (I'm playing tuba with the freshman quintet cause their original tuba play can't do it anymore) and also a Tuba-Euph quartet that I'm a part of. The next concert is the combined bands concert on April 16th at 7:30pm. The highlight of this concert will be both bands joining together to play The Lord of the Rings Symphony by de Meij. This is going to be my last concert up here at Weber State as well.... Kinda sad but a little weird at the same time since this was the feature piece I played at my first concert at Weber.

later.

The Final Countdown

This just in from Cory:

Tickets: $10

Videro Gamez

Just sitting here in the intermission of Video Games Live - a concert put on by the Utah Symphony (although it looks like it's a production that tours nationally, playing with local orchestras).

It's pretty much the awesome. They picked a guy from the audience, had him put on a t-shirt that had a picture of the ship from Space Invaders on the back of it, gave him a tethered fire button, and had the orchestra play the game music as he played a level of the game by firing with the button and moving across the stage (they tracked him) to move the ship on the big screen left and right. So, yes - the awesome.

There's lasers and fog. And they had the guy that did the viral video of himself playing Mario Bros. music on his piano blindfolded play 10 themes from the Final Fantasy series for one of the numbers. That guy has the maddd keyboard skilsz.

Let's see it in 3D

Once in a while an application comes along that breaks the model for similar applications and poses the question of why it was done. Consider for a second, if you will, your common everyday Web browser. Flat, one-tab interface, BORING!

Now try this on for size. You might need a pretty peppy CPU (as in 2.4GHz Pentium 4 or better), but I tried it on my old Pentium III 1GHz and it was functional, but not great.

Of course, there's always the standby classic of the Project Looking Glass which challenges the idea of what a computer desktop is capable of. Try it for yourself and see what I mean. Now, after taking a look at that, can anyone really say that Java is slow? The whole thing is written in Java.

Okay, I've had my geeky moment.

Cool Video

Jon, that was definitely a cool video. I loved the animation. I guess if I knew more about cellular biology, I might better appreciate the "micro machines" featured therein.

However, all is not well. At the end of the film, there is a BMW commercial for the Hydrogen 7 (the first hydrogen fuel cell performance luxury car.) People are under the impression that consuming hydrogen in their cars is responsible and good for the environment. Uh, you'd be wrong there. While burning the hydrogen in the engine doesn't produce any emissions (other than water), producing the hydrogen fuel for the car requires a lot of energy which hydrogen can't produce. Therefore, to obtain the hydrogen for the car, the "factory" must burn petroleum or coal to extract it. Hydrogen cars simply shift the focus rather than actually doing something for our environment. Where the real clean energy is to be found is in diesel derivatives. Now, burning petroleum-based diesel (kerosene) is bad, but burning biodiesel is fine. It doesn't pollute any more than burning paper. In fact, why can't we make our cars run on paper?

Anyhow, I digress. The video was fantastic. It's one of the best science-y films I've seen recently.

Thanks for sharing.

Normally

I would post this only on my video blog, but it was cool enough I'm including it here as well. I've only ever taken one biology class in my life, but I remember that it was fascinating stuff if you can get past the learning curve for the stuff you need to understand to be able to appreciate the intricacy of microbiology. But David explains it much better than I do and makes some excellent points about the nature of education. The images are great, but the video is mind-blowing.

Marble rye our reuben

As you probably know when Arby's is promoing a new sandwich they often place a large flyer with coupons for said sandwich in the Signpost. One side of the ad has tiny coupons, and the other has a large picture of the new item with blocks of text explaining all of the great things that will happen when you purchase their product. It is important to note that the coupons are perforated, so when you separate all of the coupons it is possible to arrange the blocks of text to form eloquent poetry.

O FOR TUBA

Well, strictly speaking Euphonium...

Okay: two things coming up, one past.

Starting with the passed: Last Thursday night I conducted the world premiere of my own composition, 'suite in... g?' for band. Dr. Root was kind enough to lend me the band for that number. So I had my conducting and compositional public debut. It was exciting.

AND

on Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 is a little recital of new music by student composers and also me.

BUT ESPECIALLY

on thursday, march 6th at 7:30 in rm 136 Heather Carlson is giving her senior recital and I, Jarrett, am giving my Junior Recital. It should be pretty cool. You all should come.

Of Video game music!

Huzzah! I think we should go to this concert as a collective of nerds/geek/dorks/whakado's! I also found a great youtube project that all of us should become obsessed with. Username vlogbrothers. It's these two brothers who for a whole year didn't textually communicate and only spoke to eachother using video blogs. They are both self proclaimed "nerds" and call their followers "nerdfighters" the gang sign of which is crossed live long and prosper signs. Yeah they are freaking amazing! John the older of the two is also a writer. If you ever saw the accio deathy hallows song you have gotten a small taste of the awesomeness that is Brotherhood 2.0!

Batman out kids!

How 'bout that now?

To win a bet, composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886) died standing upright.

And the winner on the guys side is....

Not to toot my own horn but, yup, I think it's fairly obvious why I not only won on the guys side, but won over all!

Also, while everybody that voted and was voted on was in Symphonic Band (I think), the contest actually started with the trombones in Marching Band and was to determine who had the best kiester in Marching Band. No offense to people that are in or have been in other sections but we decided to keep the low brass as the only voting section. We thought that some people might have found it offensive.

Anyways, at first there wasn't supposed to be anybody in the low brass to be on the ballot but after a while of arguing, fist fights and instruments being thrown around, we decided that it could and should include people in the low brass (because NOBODY has better butts, NOBODY!!!), they just couldn't vote for themself. Oh, and Kaela couldn't vote for me cause we're dating..... It went through a bunch of names, first being Kaela's Kiester Contest (because even though somebody said that it should be a contest, she was the one that said kiester...). Then, being low brass, that wasn't good enough so we decided to call it Kaela's Kiester Kontest. But we very quickly realized that that wasn't a good name (KKK, yeah, not good). So it then became Kaela's Kiester Kontest King and Kueen. The winners got nothing at all other than bragging rights to other people in the section which I'm sure you all can guess what I did..... I bragged the crap out of winning!

Also, YAY FOR CAMPUS CLOSING AT 4 P.M. TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to let everyone know that the low brass of the Symphonic Band voted Katie Tingy as having the best rear end in the symphonic band, minus the low brass of course. Congratulations! The vote took place atleast a month ago, I just kept forgetting to post it. Oh well...

Changeup

Weber's CIO will be leaving Feb 1.
There's a meeting at 9am today to (presumably) discuss his replacement.
