New and/or improved

If you want to hear the latest WBHR episode streaming directly instead of downloading the podcast, now you can. I've embedded a player in the template for you. Yay.

Also, here's the first two for those who haven't got them yet.

Episode I

Episode II

I want pizza, Steve

The pizza place that has the cool marquiseses (pl?) is near Ogden High. Its the Pizza Runner... I think.

By the by, Jason, we need to get together so that you can get your silly puddy.

Here I am...

...can't sleep, restless, listening to WBHR.

Yeah it's 2:53 am.

Um, I think that's a fairly expensive way to determine bear type.

Does anyone have a plastic skeleton? Or maybe a spare bone one, spare 'cause I wouldn't want to take your installed /dev/skeleton.

Is that pizzaria on 12th street the one with the random political insights on the marquee?

Don't forget Swing Club Tuesday nights at 7:30 in UB Ballroom.

But, the band hall does pose a great threat to Jingles' recording equipment.

Horsepower? Torque? I have a few qu'ns about these concepts. What is meant by ft-lb? How does RPM factor in to the equ'n? Did you know that a 16-liter engine has to burn 24,000 cylinders-full of fuel per minute to generate a 1000HP output? That translates to 5 liters of gas per minute that it needs to burn along with 45,000 liters of air. Not too fuel efficient. I'll stick to my 124HP 4-popper. I get between 35 and 37mpg loafing along at 2500RPM (60mph in 4th gear). This equals 10,000 cylinders-full of fuel/air per minute. And who freakin' has a 16-liter engine? (Source: HowStuffWorks.com)

Anyhow, I'm trying to understand the physics of horsepower and torque at now 3:17am.

ps: For all of your Unix/Linux integer math: bc is where it's at. For real number Unix/Linux math: xcalc is the ticket. Or you could pull out a real calculator, but that takes away all the fun of it. I know, I'm crazy. A year of the vi editor will do that to you. You start to crave glazed donuts at weird times of the day and the User Friendly comic strip is really funny. You start to laugh at anything political because you think to yourself "If only they had the power to take over the world like I do."

Jon...

I just have to say...you never cease to amaze me. Where do you find all those weird websites? I really enjoyed the Chicken of the Sea bit. :) Oh (this is to everyone), and I haven't figured out how to listen to the band hall radio. Any hints/suggestions/ideas/clues/obvious things that I missed? I downloaded itunes, but I can't figure out how to get the html in it. Please help! I love computers, but they don't like me at all and I can never figure them out. :)

Toodles!

way-o, way-o

Let's all hear it for the Geddup Noise!

Nothing short of classic

I haven't laughed this hard in very very much time. You may want a box of tissues.

Enjoy.

Payload Delivered

I hope everyperson got a cookie and had a happy birthday.

Episode III is now finished and posted.

Here are some fun sites you might enjoy.

Striking Similarities

The good thing about being a film major: little homework, no tests. The bad thing about being a film major: papers, papers, papers all at once...

Secret Haiku

Autumn leaves turn gold Apples have fallen
Embracing twilight's decline Time's fountain run dry of dew
Feeds ground then rebirth Moments, only, hang

Like a Tyger, Tyger, over-pondering the origins of its being, I am tired and worn. The good thing about being an English major: Little homework, no tests. Bad thing about being an English major: Papers, papers, all at once.

My ultimate (double whopper) First Post!

Hey just wanna say thanks for letting me on here... I'll have fun at least.

yup I love you guys.

The Duck of Many Things

Discard any card

Draw two cards
Lose all Big Items you are wielding
Give a card to the player to your right
Pick up your free cookie from the Anderson locker to celebrate Jarrett's birthday
Draw another card (with a pen/pencil this time)
Laugh a little

Mazel tov, Jarrett. I picked up the cookies at 7:15am today. Everyone says thanks.

Yeah, Ben. I like the 23 entry on Wikipedia. When I read this line:

"...23, being a fairly low number, occurs often in the media, current events, and daily life."

in connection with the idea of apophenia I couldn't help but imagine the hilarious thought of some superstitious guy somewhere noticing "strange" recurrence in certain situations of the number 23,469,821,363,245,098,124,389,764,356. I mean, wouldn't that totally freak you out if you kept seeing that number in odd places? :)

Welcome, by the by, to our new bloggers, Rich and Leisel.

A ties drive? Poor poor ded cat. It must have exerciseded too much. I dig the secretive-ness, Ben.

Secret hidden secrets

Dedication excercises are the reason formalities drive.

Phew, that was fun!

Thanks!

Diego...that was insanely awsome! I've actually heard part of that song, and I've always wanted to know what the whole thing said. Thanks, that so made my day. :) Can I just say how much I love salted cashews?! Have a good one!

Read anything good lately?

So I started reading "The Hobbit" again at work yesterday, and as I was reading it a fellow at work showed me this little video on his computer. I just thought there might be some Bilbo Baggins fans out there, or maybe some Leonard Nimoy fans.

Dopplegangsters

In other words, on the very day upon which the Jarrett would've celebrated his birthday with us by bringing us cookies, a lone bag-piper stood in a small clump of trees by the Browning Center and played Amazing Grace, as if in tribute. I thought to myself that the coincidence was too great not to be inspired.

Two of a kind.

I take it, Jarrett, if you read this, that you have someone in your mission that has Munchkin - a game, I was sad to discover last Saturday, was not currently in stock at Hastings where one of my pals bought it. If it had been there, it would've been mine. Such the funnest game.

Okay, bye.

Engage!

Jason, we need to set up a time so that you can receive your band radio trivia prize. I never see you.

We watched Love's Labor's Lost over the weekend!
Gain two levels.
I love my wife! Gain ten levels!
Weber won again!
Gain one level.

Enough levels for me. Later! Waiter.

DUCK OF DOOM

Everyone knows you shouldn't pick up a duck in a dungeon.
Lose two levels.

Nov. 5 - End of Marching Band? Beginning of Basketball Season?
Highland Games?

Well, I just thought I ought to send some greetings today. I hope it is a wonderful day for all of you.

So, Greetings.
It's good to see you all doing well.

May the Wors be with you.

Okay, that would not...

...be the first time I have heard that conspiracy theory. But, it gets funnier every time I hear (read) it. There is no man-made technology that can affect weather that drastically so as to cause a hurricane and point it at a certain place. We can seed clouds so as to cause a rainstorm, but we can't create a hurricane and we certainly can't REDIRECT IT. Good grief! I'm about laughing my butt off just thinking about it.

As for Lost, Andrew, I really want to see it. I have been wanting to either buy it myself of borrow it and watch all the episodes. The only problem is that I can't afford it now. :( I saw a trailer for it yesterday when Kristin and I went to see Flightplan, which, by the way, was quite an entertaining flick. It has some really interesting twists to it. The ending was a bit hoaky, but the rest of the film kept we wondering. Having not seen other movies like The Lady Vanishes and The Forgotten, I had no basis to judge as many others have done; so I really enjoyed the film.

Also, according to Dr. Bob, the venerable Unix instructor on Weber State campus, the Standard Examiner stands for all that is evil in the world, that which is not extreme right-ism. :) When listening to Dr. Bob, you must always take what he says with the entire tongue in cheek.

Event of the while: Getting to sit in an F-4 Phantom and walk through a C-47 (DC-3) and a C-131.
Other event of the while: Getting to play John Williams' Midway March (albeit at 80% speed because Daryl didn't want to take it at the intended tempo.)

Why not use a knife, it would cut better?

Did you know that hurricane Katrina was caused by Japanese mafia using a russian made weather machine to get revenge for the Atom bomb. Or that's what the front page of the Standard Examiner said on Wednesday. The Standard is, like, turning into a tabloid, for gosh sakes. Sheesh.

Ahem...

To be correct, it should be "band geek" not "band nerd", there is a difference

And by the way, Lost is the coolest show ever made and you should watch it or I'll poke your eyes out with a plastic spoon.

Good News

WBHR Episode 3 is very very close to being done editingnessly.

Glaed dig.

blog of the day: can't really tell for sure

funny lyrics of the day:

Hi, this John of They Might Be Giants
and you're listening to the Frank O'Toole Radio Show on WFMU
If you're driving your car right now
We urge you to sit back, relax, close your eyes, and drive really fast

So....

I am happy to say that I am moving out within the next 24 hours. I am so excited. One of my new roomies is the wonderful Robyn Johnson. I am so beyond excited....I just don't know how much longer I can wait. Life is good...even when life at home isn't. I have a ~wonderful~ (ugh) part of Scottish Dances stuck in my head. That song is interesting. Although the whole piece together is ok, I really don't care for it much. The 3rd movement is actually very nice, though. I wish I was an oboist so I could play that beautiful melody. (just kidding...why would I want to play a dead duck???) So. I heard the wonderful persussion ensemble rehearsing today. They totally rock! GO PERCUSSIONISTS! (I wish I could hit things that well) So, I'm in a very weird mood. I'm happy about the upcoming move, but I'm recovering from a nap I had in the hallway. I fell asleep sitting up. Weird. That's all I can say. Short. Fragment. Sentences. Yay! So...ummm, I think that's about as weird as I want to get for now. I hope that I can survive the night without getting chewed out for something I couldn't control. Have a great one!

Guessing...guessing...

Is Nov. 5th your birthday? Is that why you're excited for that day to come?

Oh, and I wasn't really bored; I just was curious to know what 47 days was on the calendar and so I went to this date calculator web site and plugged it in. Amazing what Google can do for you!

Take two and call me in the morning.

ps: I hate hate hate Microsoft Access. Why can't they build a sensible database engine like everyone else. No! They have to be different. GAAAAAH!

Nov. 5th? Oh, that's easy.

It's just 20 days until Thanksgiving on that day. What a day to celebrate.

If you liked Hapland, you'll probably like Grow Cube.

Peace

I've noticed that even if I think I get enough sleep the night before, I am still totally wasted by 11 AM in the morning (not to be confused with 11 AM in the evening).
see what I mean??
anywho......what would this world be like if we all saw each other fourth dimensionally?

Unix Notes (aka Words of Dr. Bob)

Today's Unix lesson (CS3730) was about the following:

  • Today's operating systems would be vastly different if the liberals were in charge.
  • X-Windows is good for displaying naughty pictures to brass off the femenist Nazi liberals. Of course, any woman who sees said images and complains is automatically a femenist Nazi liberal.
  • The X-Windows logo really means X-rated.
  • Terms like client and server (which are already changed from slave and master respectively) would be different if the liberals were in charge
  • According to the liberal Commie Pinkos, it's okay to kill() your child processes. That's just abortion. There's nothing wrong with that. :) (You see, in Unix/Linux/MacOS X, we don't just end tasks like in Windows. Instead, we kill processes when they get out of hand with the kill() command.)
Just thought I'd share the totally non-controversial lesson topic for today. We all got a nice laugh out of it.

47 Days??

August 3 or November 5, reckoning 47 days from today plus and minus.

I think you're right

Heather-Marie, I have to agree with Andrew on this one. The important part of dealing with "impossible" roommates is to talk with them. Most problems arise in any sort of relationship because there is not enough communication. Whether it means that you draw up a formal contract or you simply talk about your disagreements, the communication must occurr. When trying to communicate your distaste or non-understanding of something, use what we call "I messages." An I message goes something like this: "I feel that you have a problem with..." You would say that instead of "You aren't doing this right..." It takes the finger pointing of the "You message" away and opens up a much more natural dialog between the two people. As soon as you start in with the "you, you, you" walls go up and no further progress is possible. With the "I message" you don't build up the walls and you simply state your position. This allows the other person to respond with less of a defense and more constructive language. The important part is simply to communicate. When I was on my mission, I had certain companions where this was easy and others where this was hard. It's something everyone has to deal with at some time in their lives.

Anyhow, on to more lively conversation....

In keeping with a newly-formed rule of not creating one of those "uber-long" posts my review of the Alpine Loop drive can be found here.

Thanks...

for the input/solution/idea...whatever you want to call it. I'll see what I can do. I appreciate it!

Solution:

Heather, since becoming an RA here at the University of Utah, I have had to learn how to help people deal with impossible roommates. One of the first things I would suggest is sit down with the person and explain your concerns. Try writing out a roommate contract. A few sample concerns to have on your contract would be: garbage (who will take it out? What kind of schedule will you create?), bathroom (who cleans what and how often), "most nights I like to go to sleep by _______", guest "procedures", emotional style (do you enjoy being alone? Moods? "How will I know when you're upset?"), etc. If the conract doesn't go over well, you could always find a person to act as a mediator and set up a time when you and your roommate can both meet with the person at the same time. It is wise to not alow the mediator to be a friend (unless they are a friend to both you and your roommate and they show no bias to either party). If that doesn't work, one of you will most likely have to find a new place to live. Not sure if this is helpful, but hey, thought I'd give it a try. Best of luck and if you need anymore help, let me know.

Worms!

So...today I got yelled at for not taking out the garbage (when I was planning to do so later) and decided to go outside and call my friend to vent. While I was talking to her I found a worm. I had quite the time with it. I was brought back to my days of putting them in my pencil box (something that I shouldn't bring up) and bringing them to school. Worms are cool. They wiggle, eat dirt and well...they are physically cool. I picked up the worm and moved it to a patch of dirt. After about a half hour or so, it disappeared into the dirt. Life is full of amazing little things that make me smile... :) So...I have a question... what can someone do when they have a bad roommate and there is no way to compromise on the basic necessitites of living (ei...getting dressed in the light rather then pitch blackness, studying at night after a long day of school is over, etc...)? If anyone reads this and has any suggestions...please let me know. Having never shared a room before, I'm open to any help I can get. Have a great day!
TTFN!

One of the coolest things to come back!!!

I'm excited to announce that one of the greatest tv scientists is back on the air. BILL NYE!!!! He's on a new show called The Eyes of Nye. His show is on Mondays on Channel 9 (UEN) at 8pm (for all you people who don't have cable or satellite like me) and I'm not sure what channel it is on for people with cable or satellite.

Threpterophilia

That's what the Warner Bros on Animaniacs have. I saw it written on a piece of paper and decided to look it up. Dictionary.com failed, but Google (almost never) does.

Googly-moogly. That's what I get for checking the blog from the dashboard rather than the regular way. I didn't get to get in on the excitement of the secret post hunt.

quote of the day -
stress' (stres) n: the feeling of tension that arises when one's mind overrides the desire to choke the living daylights out of some JERK who desperately needs it

link of the day - firewalking.com

Today I learned more about why normalization is a good thing. Without it, querying a database can be less than a spree.

As for the movie watching itself, Jessica and Scooze should abduct each other. Jessica, I know that band is long past and that it won't benefit you in that way, but just in case your desire to be kidnapped was a general one and not specific to T/Th 12:00-1:50, that would be a good arrangement for the both of you.

As for comedies to watch, here are some of my favorites (keep in mind I like old movies as well):

Uncorked (I was introduced to this film by Jarrett)
The Court Jester
Arsenic and Old Lace (with Carey Grant, not the stage version with Andrew, although that one was probably excellent as well)
Bringing Up Baby
The Muppets' Treasure Island
Disney's Peter Pan
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
How to Steal a Million
The Big Mouth
Wallace and Grommit (any of them)

As for other movies I like besides comedies (these are among my top favorites):

To Kill a Mockingbird
Casablanca
The Maltese Falcon

As for movies that are trippy:
Alice in Wonderland (Disney or the live acting version)
Labyrinth
The Dark Crystal
The Last Unicorn
Krull
The Neverending Story

Good luck deciding. It always hurts my brain to try to pick out a movie.

well..

okay scooze maybe not...i don't want you completley confined to your room, although it will be better than being confined to my messy wizard of ozie room, i think that might just kill you, somthing i don't want to happen!!! Oh well, thanks andrew!

Here is a random quote from yours truly that will make at least Scooze laugh, i am not shure about anyone else...."Thank Allah for Budah" Ha Ha Anyway, Don Vito is the greatest fat man in the world and thank Budah for him...

Brace for end of post!!!!

Batman is the greatest! He's hanging from my chandelier in my apartment guarding it! so don't break into it! I love the secret post!

Are you Bracing? Curse You!

Some suggestions:

Not really sure what to tell you. I hate it when I have to recommend something to someone and I can't think of a single thing. Here are the comedys I own and their ratings.

1941 - PG
Austin Powers 2 - PG-13
Austin Powers 3 - PG-13
Back to the Future Trilogy - PG
Blazing Saddles - R
Ed Wood - R
Ghostbusters - PG
Gremlins - PG
Gremlins 2 - PG-13
The Incredibles - PG
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World - G
MASH - R
After Hours - R
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - PG
Monty Python's Meaning of Life - R
Animal House - R
Pee Wee's Big Adventure - PG
Dr. Strangelove - PG
The Terminal - PG-13
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - PG
Young Frankenstien - PG

Maybe that will help? Anyone else have a good suggestion?

Good Morning!

So I finally posted on my blog, its nothing wonderful...I go back to Trefoil this weekend!!! Yay for going back to my home away from home!!! I need this thank heavens! It may be exactly what i need to get back on track! I need people to tell me a good movie to rent for a "date" i need something really funny, yet clean, sorta...someone (Andrew) suggest something good! Kent is gonna come over some time this week and i need a good movie to rent so we can watch a movie together...

Hope everything is going fantastic for everone!!!

Jess...its all water under the bridge, lets just forget it all.....

Yeah, get Lost!

Seriously! Get it. It's the best freakin' show of all ever...s. New season starts on the 21st. And nice secret post. What's the html code for me to get white letters?

Now everyone go read my totally awesome blog. It rocks.

Lost

Buy it, watch it, love it, crave it, .....
And how about the return of the secret post?

Dude

Jessica - you should update your website. There are quotes that have occurred that need to be shared with the band-geek world.

Whoa... got my days mixed up! I need to leave now.

I have something to say.

...And it's not a complaint at all.

In fact, it's one of the coolest things of the while. There's a great American tradition that I'm sure all of us have participated in at least once in our lives. The tradition I speak of is drinking root beer. Root beer is good. Root beer is sweet. Root beer is almost sarsaparilla. Actually, it's the other way around. Anyhow, because we as Americans tend to like our root beer, we have a wide variety of root beers to satiate our pallette. Well, this guy named Anthony has taken the time, bless his heart, to review root beer. I knew that there was quite a rainbow of different root beer flavors, but I had no idea that there were quite so many as he has reviewed on his site.

On a personal note: Ebert and Roeper at the Movies gives Howie's Root Beer two thumbs and two big toes way up! Available at Bowman's in Kaysville and various other stores in Utah.

A cape turned backwards is great for protecting your when welding.

really???

so the other day, I was minding my own business, standing on the football field at Roy High, and some guy yelled out "Chicken" or something like that, and I was like, "What's up with that?" and it scared me so much, I ran to somewhere else on the field and stood there for a while.
I hope you all enjoy my run on sentence.
Remember to always wash your ear hairs.

A perma-grin on my face...

I just can't stop smiling!!!! Peach days this weekend....and a pool party is in the works for the comming week..or two!

Special thanks to Jon for bringing me lunch yester of day!

here is a song for all of my best nerd buds!

"Nerd Alert"
by The Aquabats!

Well yeah, we're the freaks of nature
We're the kids that easily bruise
We're the geeks and the creatures
Outer space hillbillies from the moon

Get stupid on your time
Keep your geriatric biker fight
Diffuse the land mines I
'm alright You're Alright We're Alright

Well we both know that our day will come
The revolution has begun
So raise your fists and take a stand
With your super cool...
Super cool wrist bands!

We broke out
And now we're running crazy D
own the middle of the boulevard
(Spaced out!)
There's a nerd alert
There's a nerd alert
And you'll never, ever
Never take us alive
Never take us alive
You'll never...!

We're fat, young and hungry
But we don't care
We got big old brains
Like Mexican candy
We got some complex flavor
Running up in here

So get stupid on your time
Get the bud bowl off the air
Diffuse the land mines
I'm alright
You're alright
We're alright

You know that your apathy
Became your enemy
And you did yourself in
Find out this phenomenon
Is running on and on
And we'll never give in...

We broke out
Now we're running crazy
Down the middle of the boulevard
(Spaced out!)
There's a nerd alert
There's a nerd alert
And you'll never, ever
Never take us alive
Never take us alive
Never take us alive
Live...

Have a Great Day!

Squeeze Clutch, Twist Throttle, Release Clutch...

...and HOLD ON!!

Celebrate Wonderful Weirdos Day! Yay! A day made especially for band geeks! So, um, what else did the calendar in the SUB say about Wonderful Weirdos?

Jon, don't feel bad about the laptop DVD players. My laptop doesn't play DVDs at all any more. It's not that it overheats, it just doesn't like DVDs.

Flash mobbing sound fun. I think it'd be a cool thing to try sometime. Y'know if something like that were to happen when I was around, I think I would ponder upon the significance and singularity of the event, but then go about my business of the day. Oh, and I would definitely blog about it.

Quote of the day: "You must choose, but choose wisely. For as the true Grail will bring you life, the false Grail will take it from you....He chose poorly."

Okay, so this 1337 I can take, but what really annoys me is AOL-ese. U no sumthing like ths whr the ppl jst typ and u nvr no wot ther sayin of if they evr took a class on how 2 rite of crs theres no puncttion or propr spelling and the thots go on n on w/o break and of crs theres lots of LOL and ROFL LOL and :) :) :) :) and !!!!!!!!!! wots wit dat? u no wot i mean?

Geez! That's almost as bad as nothavinganyspacesbetweenthewords. I'm sorry if I gripe about that a lot, but I get it a lot. I think that AOL and cell phones with that cursed txt feature are well on their way to destroying proper grammar. Of course, this is coming from a person who hasn't yet figured out how to use the phone directory feature on a cell phone. If I need to call someone, I need to know their number, right? Right? That's why there are numbers on the cell phones: so that I can call someone. It's really bad when I ask someone for a phone number and they're like "I don't know; I just use my cell phone to call them." Well, a lot of good that does me, eh? I'm not against technology by any means. If I were, I'd be in the wrong major. I just need some help with cell phone technology. I have such a hard time with it. As for AOL, well, I rate them up there with Microsoft and Apple in doing a bang-up job of convincing the world that there is no reason for you to know how to use a computer.

Wow, I didn't think a 4Runner could go that fast! Of course with gas at ~$300 a gallon, if I had a 4Runner, I wouldn't make it go very fast at all.

Okay, so last night, I played a concert in Huntsville (Utah, not Alabama) with the OCB. It was a decent concert, but owing to the fact that it was in Huntsville, the audience/band ratio was almost 1:1. The real fun of the concert was the drive to and from. If you've never taken 12th street up the canyon to Huntsville, you really need to. But, please, do it in a CAR not a truck. The canyon is a nice, twisty drive which will really make you wish it were longer. The speed limit is 40 which makes the twists in the road somewhat of a thrill to go around. There was one turn which was brutal at 40, but if you have a nice low-slung car with a low C/G and good tires, it's really fun. I say take a car because trucks simply don't have the performance geometry needed to take the turns accurately. There's too much body roll with a truck to make it any fun. You have to slow down too much to take the turns, which takes all the fun out of it. So, if you can use a nice car, preferrably with all-wheel independent suspension, it should be a fun ride. It's really scenic too. Be sure to take it with the windows down. Take in the smell and sound of the canyon. Last night when I went through the canyon, I passed some homes and restaurants and there was this distict smell of hickory. Thoughts of camping and outdoor recreating came to my mind and I kind of just enjoyed the moment. Next drive up for review: The Alpine Loop and Cascade Springs.

I'll catch y'all later!

How is this thing supposed to work?

Ok, hello blogosphere!

Celebrate Wonderful Weirdos Day. I like the whiteboard in the SUB where they write what day it is. I wouldn't be aware of most days-to-celebrate otherwise.

I was highly entertained to learn about flash mobbing yesterday. I was not highly entertained to learn that the laptops you check out from the SUB will only play DVDs for so long before they heat up and the DVD player app starts freezing.

Not cool.

So today is going to be interesting. First of all, I forgot to wear my purple shirt to work like we're all supposed to on Fridays. Second of all, this week better be better than last week for work or I'll be sadness. Third of all, I still have no music to Come Sail Away which we perform tomorrow. Drat x2.

fun thing of the while: reading licence plates as if they were all intentionally written in 1337. Ah... that was a good year for licence plates. 1337. Columbus sailed the Ocean's Eleven. 0r 50|\/|37h||\|9 1||<3 7h47.

Pardon my ultra-l33t.

Imagine this scene:
You are sitting waiting for a bus downtown in some large city. The bus stop is right in front of some large public building. Suddenly, and without any warning, approximately 200 people converge on the sidewalk and steps of the building. They each produce a Twinkie, hold it aloft and chant in unison, "Long live King Richard!" They then proceed to eat their respective creme-filled sponge cake confections while spinning in a circle, and then disperse without a word.

Well. What would you do? Would you still get on the bus and just go about your business as if nothing had happened? Regardless of how you think you would react, such an occurance is entirely possible. Things like this started happening a few years ago and are only increasing in frequency. Just hope that you're ready if and when a flash flood happens near you.

thursday stuff

It is thursday all day long, and I decided whilst I worked in the ever popular Mac lab, that I would post a blog. Something that people should never do is schedule a 7 AM class. I feel that that is just too early.
Well, I think I will nap now......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..........alright, I feel refreshed!!
Have a grand day, all.

I was afraid

that the author of one of my texts was going to be a very dry writer when he said

...we have intentionally mixed mathematical notation...and a prose phrase. This results in perfectly understandable communication; we take this liberty throughout.

However, I realized that it was not the author but the subject itself which was dry when I read the following:
Anyone who does not think that the null string is confusing has missed something. It is already a problem, and it gets worse later.

While I realize that the foregoing quotations may appear to many to be equally inane and boring, you must realized that while the subject matter of the second quote is dry, the way he wrote it is.....

Ok, for those of you still awake - on to Actually Interesting Things.

I hate computers. The laptop checkout system was down last week in the UB. Now the system is back up, but I was informed on asking about checking one out a few minutes ago that their printer - the one that makes the nice little contracts that they require you to sign before checking out a laptop - is down.

No love.

---

Sometime later that evening...

You do meet the most interesting people at TNT. If any of you haven't come to it yet at least once - shame on you. It's grand fun. And speaking of meeting, I have a meeting scheduled in a few minutes between my brain and a rusty, spiked, two-handed, iron, medieval homework problem involving a logical proof dealing with palindromes. If you said "ugly" you were right on the money.

I will celebrate Fight Procrastination Day today by not waiting until it's Google Commemoration Day tomorrow to wish you happy Google Commemoration Day. I'll do it now.

quote of the day: never put off today what you can put off tomorrow
fun of the day: TNT
more fun of the day: working on FXML v. 0.1 (more on that later)
less fun of the day: homework for my CS 4110 class
leaving Lampros of the day: right about now

Computing Grand Challenge

Okay, I have the question of questions for you. I just installed MySQL (a database management system) on my Red Hat 9.0 Linux machine at home. This is a painfully slow machine (233 MHz, 128 MB RAM) but in terminal (non-GUI) mode, it's not too bad. Anyhow, after I set up MySQL, it told me in no uncertain terms that I needed to create a root user for the system. Now, I already have a root user account on my Linux machine, but I'm guessing that's not the same as root user for the database system. So, if any of you have any knowledge about setting up MySQL on a Linux box, please let me know. It's installed and everything and the daemon runs without a problem; I just need to know how to set up users.

Now on to other news that's going on in the world. On Saturday, I bought a neat movie that I hadn't seen since the mid-90s. It's a little movie called "Explorers." I really like the show because it reminds me of when I was a kid. I never flew into outer space, but would like to have done so. :)

Anyhow, so yeah, I don't have a lot to say so I shall bid you a fond farewell. Take it easy, y'all! I'll check back later!

my very own blog

I've decided to follow the example of those who went before me and create my own blog. It is at www.wsupercussivist.blogspot.com. As I am new at running my own blog, suggestions would be most helpful.
Also, I am very excited that today is friday. I will enjoy not having school on Monday. I still have to work, but only for four hours. Yay for that.
Just so you know, I am sometimes known to spout off odd sayings. I am taking medicine for it. Although school makes it hard to take the medicine. Does anyone know where I can get some bottled sleep?? Prefferably grape flavored.

Visual

And not just for marching band, either.

Andrew, this may interest you. On Sept. 21 for Convocations the speaker will be Camille Cellucci. She has been the Visual Effects Producer for many movies, including 2 of the 3 Matrix films and Titanic. I'm not sure what time convocations is, but if I have a class then I might just skip it to go to this.

In other news, the PCs in the UB lab have no DVD players. The DVD players on the Macs in the UB lab are admin password protected. The laptops available for checkout from the Information desk in the UB have working DVD players, but their laptop checkout system is down this week.

Foiled. Completely.

Welcome, welcome!

Welcome back to school, y'all!

I hope y'all's days have been good. I know mine has. I had two classes today that were the same old same old as far as class introductions go. I did learn in my database class that hobbies count for something in general class lecture, as do your pet's names (Psycho, in my case.)

The real meaty lesson of the day came from my Client/Server programming (UNIX) class, taught by the infamous Dr. Bob Capener (those of you in CS will recognize that name instantly.) Let's see; what did I learn today? Oh yeah, I learned about this:

  • Fly fishing takes a good deal of patience and knowledge of the river.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, take a bomb-laden B-52 through a hard turn maneuver. You might lose the bombs.
  • Democrats = Commie Pinkos :)
  • The Standard Examiner is Democrat. (see above statement)
  • Microsoft is one of Satan's imps incarnate on the earth. Nothing they create makes any sense or works like it should.
  • Diabetes is caused by working for WSU.
  • FORTRAN is the inspired word of God, or at least something very close.
So yeah, that's the basic jist of the lesson in Client/Server class today. Productive lesson. If any of you happen to get a chance to take a class from Dr. Bob, do it. At least sit in on a lesson of his. I think his best lessons come when he's in the UNIX lab. He talks about everything from fork() to how we should take our kids out of the public schools and teach school in the churches.

Oh, and I just saw a guy drive by on a motorcycle with what looked like a saddle blanket between him and the seat of the bike. The excitement never ceases.

Wow, Lena...

...that must have been something.

That was seriously the longest spelling of the word sleep I've ever seen. Hands down. It was even longer than antidisestablishmentarianism, which is commonly regarded as the longest word in the English language. So, Lena, you must have really needed a break and who am I to get in the way of some well-deserved R & R. ;)

Everything's Catching On Fire

It is, too. Ben I didn't get a chance to talk much last evening on account of the potatoes, etc., but everything is dry and brown and people are being careless with matches.

Ok, so I'm uber-looking-forward to trying out the new cards. They look like they'll work fine. And fun.

Marching band is going grrrrrrreat! Dr. Root picked a great staff for us this year. They're even doing good (IMH/AO) at problem-solving. Dynamic. Just what leaders should be.

I might've titled this post "Please pass the milk", but that's already been used. You see, I ran out of milk here at work and I have all this cereal calling my name.

Love the new toon. "Cheer up Mr. Grasshopper; you have no central nervous system!"

Laughing my butt off!!

You HAVE to check this out!

www.dooku.net

Click the rectangle below the picture to change the music. I particularly find the Benny Hill show music hillarious.

I'm having a....

heartattack!

Cards for the bicycle gang are complete. Stay tuned!

Marching, marching...

Please, please, please get photos of the band this season and pass them on to me. I'll post them on the band photo album (as marked on the links to the left.) Try to avoid sending pictures that are over 200KB in size because it makes it difficult for me to upload them and seriously, no on wants to wait a long time to view the pics because they're huge. Gotta keep up the photo album because we're at 469 photos and counting.

Again, please send me pictures! I may not be actively in the band, but I still like to maintain my contact and help out wherever I can. Fear not, though, I still do play my trumpet. :)

Oh, and if you have pictures that aren't necessarily related to band activities, it's okay. If you want to share them, go ahead and send them to me and I'll post them on the band photo album.

Holy Cow......

....Batman, what an AMAZING BAND!!!!!!!
Today, we put ourselves a full 4 days ahead in band camp on Marching and Maneuvers!!!!!!

And that music rehearsal?!!!! WOW!!!backwards WOW!!! upside down MOM!!! backwards MOM!!!

Matt and I are SO impressed at the way today went, and how well everything took.

Can't wait for tomorrow.

Lemme outta here! (Kids can be so cruel.)

Carpe Manus

A real quick post 'cuz I gotta run here in a sec.

Today was a once in a lifetime experience for me: I got to play for the VFW National Convention with the combined WSU Wind Ensemble/Ogden Concert Band at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, for which the keynote speaker was the Commander in Chief of our nation's armed forces. After he spoke he came down and shook my hand...along with a few hundred other peoples'. But still - it's not every day you get to shake the President's hand.

Quite the start for a week of band camp. Things there are looking interesting. Fewer people, but my main concern is that I'll enjoy all the music we're going to play. I have never been a fan of rock tunes as main show material, but I guess I'll just have to rewrite the stock parts to be kickin'.

Last Saturday I got the CD of Thenami's show music and wrote the tenor and bass parts for the opener. (Actually I have a few measures to change for the bass part still, but it's basically done.)

Ok, hope you enjoy the band hall news flash video posts. Tha's right! Crazy things are already happening.

Episode 3 is recorded and editing will begin soon.

Peace

How To...

A Brief Tutorial.

To delete comments, just view the comment, scroll down and click on the little trash can icon. Simple, eh? I just tried it on the Jinglyblog comment and it worked wonders.

I hear the wind blow, I hear the wind blow...

It seems to say, "Hello. Hello, I'm the one who loves you so."

Question: Does anybody know how to edit comments. In essence, there's, apparently, a new wave of spamming where the people put the spam your blog as a comment and I would like to know how to get rid of it. Any ideas?

All alone all alone...

...all by myself.

Guess what? I got a work study job at the Utah Museum of Natural History! Wooo Hooo!!!! And last night was just fun. There were four busts for alcohol and whatnot in my area and I had to assist on a possible marijuana bust. Fun times. So, now I'm really tired because I was forced to stay up 'til 3 am last night no thanks to the rule breaking. But despite stupidity like that, I am really really enjoying being an RA. I have really good kids living on my floor. They're all pretty nice and respectful. I'm too tired to think of anything else to write here.

The Day that Love.....

Came to play!!!

strongben(@)hotmail(.)com

Andrew, that be my addy. Sign me up and we'll go at it again this year! Yay!

I jump the band wagon and join the crowd. I'm so ready for school to start. I have the coolest class. At least that's what it looks like it'll be. I mean, its Dinosaurs and Fossil Record. It looks down right up my alley, but then again, its a 1020 class and might be filled with idiots and stupid heads. And if you know me, I see (hate) dead (stupid) people.

Hava and I met Orson Scott Card and his wife last night. It was awesome. If anyone wants to help me gloat, they can ask to see my two personalized and autographed books that Mr. Card signed for me. He's quite an awesome guy from the 2 hours I saw him in allowed me to see.

We've decided that Mofia will be our preferred game of the year. The optimal size of the group being 8 to 10 players and a narrator, expect Hava and I to be hosting quite a number of these events in the months to come. And, as we all learned on Tuesday, bring your thinking caps and your strategery and we'll have a greatness time. We'll also be much about clamping down on the whole 'Dead people can't talk' rule; much to the fun of all of us!

Anyway, Mr. Card (being a fantasy writing mormon that he is) has inspired me, so I'm off to fill more pages with my fantastical prose. Tootles all!

Come on...

...and wreck my car.

Football season is upon us once again, and as such, I have created the annual football pick-em group over at Yeeeeoooowwwwwzzzzaaa.com...er. yahoo.com, that is. If'n you'd like to participate, and yes Ben I am specifically talking to you, just get me your e-mail addy someway or another before too late so I can get you an invite.

In other news: my world as an RA offically begins today with early-bird check in. I am both excited and nervous to start this new chapter in my education. There is A LOT of information that was given to myself and fellow RAs over the last ten days and it seems a bit daunting, but just as with any other job, I suppose you get the hang of it after a while. Any way, time to be gettin' myself back to work.

Cheers!

Time of Firsts

And lasts...

This last week and half has been extremly...well fullfilling, i shall, for everyones knowledge, be returning to our lovely home of ogden on friday, but i will not be returning to marching band or symphonic band this year...circumstances beyond my control are forcing me to quit music....for the time being.

Hope everyone is ready for school...I am!

Good News......

Dr Root has come through, and we've been informed that our new uniforms
should be in our hands no later than the 22nd of Sept, and Matt, Jessie, and I
intend to debut them at the Oct 8th game. YEA FOR DR ROOT AND PURCHASING
POWER!!!!!!!!

Ultimate Destruction - $10

For all you demolition derby fans, I have the info about the Les Schwabb Demo Derby at the Davis County Fair. To get there, take State Street in Farmington west over I-15. You'll go past the Davis County Sheriff's Department (they teach HAM radio classes there) and you can't miss the fairgrounds on the left. Parking is free. It should be really fun!

Something grabbed ahold of my hand....

I didn't know what had my hand. But that's when all my troubles began.

I'm not angry with the world anymore.

Bad News......

The University to which we all attend, mostly, in it's infinite wisdom, decided last May that instead of finalizing the purchase of our new uniforms on time to have them for homecoming, delayed an ENTIRE MONTH!!!!! YEA FOR UPPER STINKING MANAGEMENT!!!!!
Right now, projected SHIP date is 11/12/2005.
Matt and I are livid!!!!! Dr Root is taking it to the Pres of the Univ, to see if we can get extra funding to ship faster (even though 165 days from order is ridiculous to make and ship 150 or so uniforms).
If that doesn't work, we're gonna yell reAlly REALLY REALLY LOUD at the stupid people who take too dang long to make stinking uniforms. I REFUSE TO ALLOW THE BAND TO MARCH IN CAT EXCRAMINT!!!!!!!!!
so there you are.

The internet is great!!

I just found a really cool website. For all you LDS people out there (and I know that's most of who reads this blog) I found a resource to download all kinds of church publications in audio format. This does include songs from soundtracks, and even Jesus the Christ, by James E. Talmage, in a 448MB .zip file. (Yeah, the Windows XP ISO image is smaller than that.) Click here to see the page.

I heard a sound....

Turned around. Turned around to find the thing that made the sound.

Don't have much to say other than I'm angry with the world.

Laters

What...

...do you mean?

People with rubber necks should be ticketed? The last time I checked, the only humanoid beings known to possess rubber necks are crash test dummies (like Buster from Mythbusters) and I suppose they probably could do with a few driver improvement courses. Y'know, crashing into barriers at 40 mph isn't usually a good thing, especially for the airbags which have to come out of their nice warm steering wheels and dashboards just to keep the dummies' heads from exerting 108G's on the driver controls.

Okay, I have to comment on something. Kristin and I tried the restaurant on Harrison called Jasoh (pronounced jay-SOH.) The food there was excellent, but a bit on the pricy side. I had a filet mignon that had an MSRP of $31.00. However, since I had a birthday coupon, that knocked 25 bucks off the sticker price. Kristin had a really good chicken breast covered in this amazing sauce. The crab cakes were pretty good too. Our waiter's name was Trevor and he was the most laid-back waiter I have ever seen. I really enjoyed the service. They do offer cooking classes at Jasoh which run through the summer at a price of $40 or $55 with wine. I don't know about you, but I don't drink wine, thank goodness, but it sometimes is nice to cook with. Though I would have a hard time cooking with a 1908 vintage wine commanding a price of some $40K per bottle. This wine can be had at a certain hotel in Las Vegas. Jasoh also offers such desserts as Tiramisu (though it's best to have this dessert at someone's house who knows how to make it without making it laden with alcohol.) All in all, however, my experience at Jasoh was a good one. It sits atop the list of restaurants I have visited this month (seeing as the only other restaurant I have visited this month was Arby's.) No, seriously, it was a very good restaurant. Highly recommended.

Oh, yeah, they also have a wildberry lemonade that is really quite tasty, but you have to ask for it specifically.

Hmm, this one was loaded with lots of numbers.

What's that blue thing...

...doing here?

Please pass the milk please!

Please pass the milk please!

"you guys are freaks!!" as said... er, typed, by my sister Melanie.

Happy congratulatoriness to Dave and Melanie (a different Melanie from that quoted above) on their nuptual union today. Hava and I shall go and offer them personal sulatations of congratulations this afternoon and then return home to a new roomy and a deeply touching episode of Lost.

Rubber-neckers should be ticketed!

Is this thing on?

Mysterious Whisper

And yes, I do happen to walk along darkened corridors.

But only every so often.

The guy...

...who hit you in the eye?

Are you talking to me? Did I hit you in the eye? If so, when? Also, if so, I appologize vehemently. I would feel terrible if I hit someone in the eye. Well, if the person was attacking me or something, I might not feel so bad, but I don't remember being attacked in recent history (as in the last few years.)

Oh yeah, I watched a little movie the other day called "The Fifth Element." Strange movie, to be sure, and kind of a cliche (hopeless situation about saving the world) but I did like the stylization used in it and the music. Plavalaguna was cool.

Yay...

...I mean, Hooray!

Cool. Silly Putty! You can never have enough Silly Putty. By the way, does anyone want a black D.A.R.E. antenna ball? I have four extra that I picked up from the Heber Days Parade.

A sound editor for the Mac? Hmmmm. I'm kind of surprised that Audacity doesn't work because it's an open-source project that's originally built for flavors of *NIX, which MacOS X is a part of. The only sound editor that I've ever used is Cool Edit Pro which is now an Adobe product and it's definitely not free. You might try looking on pure-mac.com for some software. I'm not really savvy about audio software too much. Image software is a different story, but even there I have a very nice little set of tools I like (MS Image Composer, Fireworks, etc.)

Anyhow, gotta go! :) Take it easy, y'all!

Right U R

Jason takes the silly putty. We might have to make the questions a bit harder in the future.

Kudos. Props. Etcetera.

I was vaguely pondering having a podcast of my own aside from WBHR, but I can't think of much that people would find interesting.

Anyway.

Also, Andrew is looking for some quality free sound editing software for Mac. Audacity and Cacaphony didn't work so well for him. Any help would be great.

Also, this friday is our stake Lagoon day. If anyone wants to go with I can probably get you a ticket for $20 or an entrance pass (no rides) for free. There are a few coupons for free rides and dollars off stuff.

Also also, how's about a hike this saturday morning? I'm thinking Ben Lomond or Mt. Ogden or Mt. Timpanogos.

Die Unendliche Geschichte

Atreyu was played by an actor named Noah Hathaway (who is now heavily tatooed.) He was originally supposed to be green, but said that the green reminded him of fungus. He also went on to play Harry Potter, Jr. in a film called Troll from 1986.

Fozzie Bear is hip

Andrew, the last line of your post is as hilarious as it is bewildering.

Audacity

And by Episode 2 I mean WBHR ep 2. I'm currently fixing the 30 second silence that accidently worked its way into the pcast and will re-upload it shortly. If you've already dl'd it, grab the new version when it's up. Enjoy.

A new week dawns...

...literally, if you look out my office window this time of the morning.

Welcome back, Andrew!! Long time no hear, er something like that. ;) I hope that your move-in was pleasant and fairly uneventful (as in injuries, deaths, dismemberments, etc.) Oh, and by the way, happy birthday (a few days late.)

So, I spent the weekend in Heber City at Kristin's grandpa's property. We went there to spend time with him and to ride the horses. I was really excited to ride, but soon after starting, I realized that I was in a bad situation. My horse, Raindance, was a bouncy horse and I had the saddle from hell. It was a very uncomfortable hour or so. My legs felt like they were being twisted right off at the knee and I bounced all over on the way down the hill. Raindance also has this thing about being in the lead. If he's not in the lead, then he freaks out and tries to run to get in the lead. When you're as inexperienced as I am at riding horses, it kind of freaks you out when the horse decides to run. So needless to say, I don't think that Raindance was very happy with me at the end of the ride because I kept pulling on his reigns to slow him down. I think, based on this experience, that I'm better at controling poorly-tuned motorcycles than horses. But, if I have a better saddle, I'm more than willing to give it another try. It's funny getting off the horse when you're not used to it because your legs feel like Jell-O under you. :)

Also, during the weekend, we had to wash the horses. Oh my word, that's a funny sight. Kristin simply grabbed the horses by the halter in one hand and sprayed them with a hose in the other hand. The horses hate being sprayed and so the run around in a circle trying to get away from the hose. Spraying their face is really funny too. The monster horsefly that kept bugging us was not so funny. They make the horses jump around because they hurt when the bite.

On a geeky note, I did get a full Unix system running on my Windows machine last Thursday. No, this is not Linux and it's not virtual machine. It's a project called Cygwin and it's a port of most packages available to Unix over to the Win32 platform. It's so complete that I can run a full X desktop on Windows. One thing to note: because it's not native Unix, Cygwin may not be as stable as, say, SVR6, or BSD/OS.

Da Da Da

Back and Better Than Ever, Baby!!

Woo Hoo!!!

Moved into my dorm today. It's quite lonesome as there is not another soul in the building at the moment, but tomorrow my co-RA moves in downstairs.

Jon! I really can't remember what the URL for the site with the recording program was (Ya know? For the kids. er, I mean, for the radio show and CD making). Please post it!

Don't know what else to say except I'm tired. Must stop. He is our hero. I promise not to kill you.

School approaches.....

and we begin preparations for marching band. Matt sent out a newsletter to everyone we had an email for about marching band, and band camp, and other details. If you did not receive the email

Right, then

A warm welcome to Mr. Burns. We hope you don't take offense to our screening process, as this forum was originally intended for people who hang out in the Val A. Browning particular band hall. But what the hey. This place was designed to bring band geeks together electronically when they were separated physically. So jump right in - the ASCII's fine.

Kristen moved?

In other news, I have finally gotten around to editing the second episode. It's about 1/2 way done so far. Expect it early next week. When the regular school kicks in we should also be adding a Morning Show (or is it Mourning Show?) hosted by Jessica, Hava, and Suzanne. Andrew has also agreed to be our field agent and shoot us audio content from the far-away and most magical land of That School Down South But Not That Far South. Bling bling, as it were.

Diegs, you have my most sincere empathies for your (pardon the pun) current plight. I've woken up to the sound of dripping water in my room before and it's not that fun to be flooded.

On the other hand, Flood is one of TMBG's best albums, both by my own opinion and popular concensus as evidenced by the retail sales figures.

And speaking of music, 4 or 5 drum peoples will be driving to Park City this evening to for to hear an concert extraordinaire: Close Encounters of the Percussive Kind. Should be rockin'.

Ok, so now I'm off to add Brian as my post implies.

Peace

Let the dude in. Let's see what he's got to say. I'm up to meeting new people. If he posts things we don't want him to post, we'll warn him and then later kick him out. But, if someone is truly intersted in being a part of (WBHR) the band hall, then who are we to refuse entry. Besides, its almost the start of fall semester when we let in dozens of unsuspecting freshman to the randomness and insanity that is the paradise we know as the band hall.

In other news, flying trapeze artists are flipping out!

Later, all y'all
