I've noticed that even if I think I get enough sleep the night before, I am still totally wasted by 11 AM in the morning (not to be confused with 11 AM in the evening).

Unix Notes (aka Words of Dr. Bob)

Today's Unix lesson (CS3730) was about the following:

• Today's operating systems would be vastly different if the liberals were in charge.
• X-Windows is good for displaying naughty pictures to brass off the femenist Nazi liberals. Of course, any woman who sees said images and complains is automatically a femenist Nazi liberal.
  
• The X-Windows logo really means X-rated.
• Terms like client and server (which are already changed from slave and master respectively) would be different if the liberals were in charge
• According to the liberal Commie Pinkos, it's okay to kill() your child processes. That's just abortion. There's nothing wrong with that. :) (You see, in Unix/Linux/MacOS X, we don't just end tasks like in Windows. Instead, we kill processes when they get out of hand with the kill() command.)

Just thought I'd share the totally non-controversial lesson topic for today. We all got a nice laugh out of it.

I think you're right

Heather-Marie, I have to agree with Andrew on this one. The important part of dealing with "impossible" roommates is to talk with them. Most problems arise in any sort of relationship because there is not enough communication. Whether it means that you draw up a formal contract or you simply talk about your disagreements, the communication must occurr. When trying to communicate your distaste or non-understanding of something, use what we call "I messages." An I message goes something like this: "I feel that you have a problem with..." You would say that instead of "You aren't doing this right..." It takes the finger pointing of the "You message" away and opens up a much more natural dialog between the two people. As soon as you start in with the "you, you, you" walls go up and no further progress is possible. With the "I message" you don't build up the walls and you simply state your position. This allows the other person to respond with less of a defense and more constructive language. The important part is simply to communicate. When I was on my mission, I had certain companions where this was easy and others where this was hard. It's something everyone has to deal with at some time in their lives.

Anyhow, on to more lively conversation....

Solution:

Heather, since becoming an RA here at the University of Utah, I have had to learn how to help people deal with impossible roommates. One of the first things I would suggest is sit down with the person and explain your concerns. Try writing out a roommate contract. A few sample concerns to have on your contract would be: garbage (who will take it out? What kind of schedule will you create?), bathroom (who cleans what and how often), "most nights I like to go to sleep by _______", guest "procedures", emotional style (do you enjoy being alone? Moods? "How will I know when you're upset?"), etc. If the conract doesn't go over well, you could always find a person to act as a mediator and set up a time when you and your roommate can both meet with the person at the same time. It is wise to not alow the mediator to be a friend (unless they are a friend to both you and your roommate and they show no bias to either party). If that doesn't work, one of you will most likely have to find a new place to live. Not sure if this is helpful, but hey, thought I'd give it a try. Best of luck and if you need anymore help, let me know.

Worms!

So...today I got yelled at for not taking out the garbage (when I was planning to do so later) and decided to go outside and call my friend to vent. While I was talking to her I found a worm. I had quite the time with it. I was brought back to my days of putting them in my pencil box (something that I shouldn't bring up) and bringing them to school. Worms are cool. They wiggle, eat dirt and well...they are physically cool. I picked up the worm and moved it to a patch of dirt. After about a half hour or so, it disappeared into the dirt. Life is full of amazing little things that make me smile... :) So...I have a question... what can someone do when they have a bad roommate and there is no way to compromise on the basic necessitites of living (ei...getting dressed in the light rather then pitch blackness, studying at night after a long day of school is over, etc...)? If anyone reads this and has any suggestions...please let me know. Having never shared a room before, I'm open to any help I can get. Have a great day!

His show is on Mondays on Channel 9 (UEN) at 8pm (for all you people who don't have cable or satellite like me) and I'm not sure what channel it is on for people with cable or satellite.

Today I learned more about why normalization is a good thing. Without it, querying a database can be less than a spree.

As for the movie watching itself, Jessica and Scooze should abduct each other. Jessica, I know that band is long past and that it won't benefit you in that way, but just in case your desire to be kidnapped was a general one and not specific to T/Th 12:00-1:50, that would be a good arrangement for the both of you.

I have something to say.

...And it's not a complaint at all.

In fact, it's one of the coolest things of the while. There's a great American tradition that I'm sure all of us have participated in at least once in our lives. The tradition I speak of is drinking root beer. Root beer is good. Root beer is sweet. Root beer is almost sarsaparilla. Actually, it's the other way around. Anyhow, because we as Americans tend to like our root beer, we have a wide variety of root beers to satiate our pallette. Well, this guy named Anthony has taken the time, bless his heart, to review root beer. I knew that there was quite a rainbow of different root beer flavors, but I had no idea that there were quite so many as he has reviewed on his site.

On a personal note: Ebert and Roeper at the Movies gives Howie's Root Beer two thumbs and two big toes way up! Available at Bowman's in Kaysville and various other stores in Utah.

Celebrate Wonderful Weirdos Day! Yay! A day made especially for band geeks! So, um, what else did the calendar in the SUB say about Wonderful Weirdos?

Jon, don't feel bad about the laptop DVD players. My laptop doesn't play DVDs at all any more. It's not that it overheats, it just doesn't like DVDs.

Flash mobbing sound fun. I think it'd be a cool thing to try sometime. Y'know if something like that were to happen when I was around, I think I would ponder upon the significance and singularity of the event, but then go about my business of the day. Oh, and I would definitely blog about it.

Okay, so this 1337 I can take, but what really annoys me is AOL-ese. Geez! That's almost as bad as nothavinganyspacesbetweenthewords. I'm sorry if I gripe about that a lot, but I get it a lot. I think that AOL and cell phones with that cursed txt feature are well on their way to destroying proper grammar. Of course, this is coming from a person who hasn't yet figured out how to use the phone directory feature on a cell phone. If I need to call someone, I need to know their number, right? Right? That's why there are numbers on the cell phones: so that I can call someone. It's really bad when I ask someone for a phone number and they're like "I don't know; I just use my cell phone to call them." Well, a lot of good that does me, eh? I'm not against technology by any means. If I were, I'd be in the wrong major. I just need some help with cell phone technology. I have such a hard time with it. As for AOL, well, I rate them up there with Microsoft and Apple in doing a bang-up job of convincing the world that there is no reason for you to know how to use a computer.

Wow, I didn't think a 4Runner could go that fast! Of course with gas at ~$300 a gallon, if I had a 4Runner, I wouldn't make it go very fast at all.

Okay, so last night, I played a concert in Huntsville (Utah, not Alabama) with the OCB. It was a decent concert, but owing to the fact that it was in Huntsville, the audience/band ratio was almost 1:1. The real fun of the concert was the drive to and from. If you've never taken 12th street up the canyon to Huntsville, you really need to. But, please, do it in a CAR not a truck. The canyon is a nice, twisty drive which will really make you wish it were longer. The speed limit is 40 which makes the twists in the road somewhat of a thrill to go around. There was one turn which was brutal at 40, but if you have a nice low-slung car with a low C/G and good tires, it's really fun. I say take a car because trucks simply don't have the performance geometry needed to take the turns accurately. There's too much body roll with a truck to make it any fun. You have to slow down too much to take the turns, which takes all the fun out of it. So, if you can use a nice car, preferrably with all-wheel independent suspension, it should be a fun ride. It's really scenic too. Be sure to take it with the windows down. Take in the smell and sound of the canyon. Last night when I went through the canyon, I passed some homes and restaurants and there was this distict smell of hickory. Thoughts of camping and outdoor recreating came to my mind and I kind of just enjoyed the moment. Next drive up for review: The Alpine Loop and Cascade Springs.

Celebrate Wonderful Weirdos Day. I like the whiteboard in the SUB where they write what day it is. I wouldn't be aware of most days-to-celebrate otherwise.

I was highly entertained to learn about flash mobbing yesterday. I was not highly entertained to learn that the laptops you check out from the SUB will only play DVDs for so long before they heat up and the DVD player app starts freezing.

Not cool.

So today is going to be interesting. First of all, I forgot to wear my purple shirt to work like we're all supposed to on Fridays. Second of all, this week better be better than last week for work or I'll be sadness. Third of all, I still have no music to Come Sail Away which we perform tomorrow. Drat x2.

You are sitting waiting for a bus downtown in some large city. The bus stop is right in front of some large public building. Suddenly, and without any warning, approximately 200 people converge on the sidewalk and steps of the building. They then proceed to eat their respective creme-filled sponge cake confections while spinning in a circle, and then disperse without a word.

Well. What would you do? Would you still get on the bus and just go about your business as if nothing had happened? Regardless of how you think you would react, such an occurance is entirely possible. Things like this started happening a few years ago and are only increasing in frequency. Just hope that you're ready if and when a flash flood happens near you.

It is thursday all day long, and I decided whilst I worked in the ever popular Mac lab, that I would post a blog. Something that people should never do is schedule a 7 AM class. I feel that that is just too early.

I was afraid

that the author of one of my texts was going to be a very dry writer when he said

However, I realized that it was not the author but the subject itself which was dry when I read the following:

Anyone who does not think that the null string is confusing has missed something. It is already a problem, and it gets worse later.

While I realize that the foregoing quotations may appear to many to be equally inane and boring, you must realized that while the subject matter of the second quote is dry, the way he wrote it is.....

I hate computers. The laptop checkout system was down last week in the UB. Now the system is back up, but I was informed on asking about checking one out a few minutes ago that their printer - the one that makes the nice little contracts that they require you to sign before checking out a laptop - is down.

Computing Grand Challenge

Okay, I have the question of questions for you. I just installed MySQL (a database management system) on my Red Hat 9.0 Linux machine at home. This is a painfully slow machine (233 MHz, 128 MB RAM) but in terminal (non-GUI) mode, it's not too bad. Anyhow, after I set up MySQL, it told me in no uncertain terms that I needed to create a root user for the system. Now, I already have a root user account on my Linux machine, but I'm guessing that's not the same as root user for the database system. So, if any of you have any knowledge about setting up MySQL on a Linux box, please let me know. It's installed and everything and the daemon runs without a problem; I just need to know how to set up users.

Now on to other news that's going on in the world. On Saturday, I bought a neat movie that I hadn't seen since the mid-90s. It's a little movie called "Explorers." I really like the show because it reminds me of when I was a kid. I never flew into outer space, but would like to have done so. :)

Anyhow, so yeah, I don't have a lot to say so I shall bid you a fond farewell. Take it easy, y'all! I'll check back later!

Also, I am very excited that today is friday. I will enjoy not having school on Monday. I still have to work, but only for four hours. Yay for that.
Just so you know, I am sometimes known to spout off odd sayings. I am taking medicine for it. Although school makes it hard to take the medicine. Does anyone know where I can get some bottled sleep?? Prefferably grape flavored.

She has been the Visual Effects Producer for many movies, including 2 of the 3 Matrix films and Titanic. I'm not sure what time convocations is, but if I have a class then I might just skip it to go to this.

In other news, the PCs in the UB lab have no DVD players. The DVD players on the Macs in the UB lab are admin password protected. The laptops available for checkout from the Information desk in the UB have working DVD players, but their laptop checkout system is down this week.

Foiled. Completely.

Welcome back to school, y'all!

I hope y'all's days have been good. I know mine has. I had two classes today that were the same old same old as far as class introductions go. I did learn in my database class that hobbies count for something in general class lecture, as do your pet's names (Psycho, in my case.)

The real meaty lesson of the day came from my Client/Server programming (UNIX) class, taught by the infamous Dr. Bob Capener (those of you in CS will recognize that name instantly.) Let's see; what did I learn today? Oh yeah, I learned about this:

• Fly fishing takes a good deal of patience and knowledge of the river.
• Do not, under any circumstances, take a bomb-laden B-52 through a hard turn maneuver. You might lose the bombs.
• Democrats = Commie Pinkos :)
• The Standard Examiner is Democrat. (see above statement)
• Microsoft is one of Satan's imps incarnate on the earth. Nothing they create makes any sense or works like it should.
• Diabetes is caused by working for WSU.
• FORTRAN is the inspired word of God, or at least something very close.
  

So yeah, that's the basic jist of the lesson in Client/Server class today. Productive lesson. If any of you happen to get a chance to take a class from Dr. Bob, do it. At least sit in on a lesson of his. I think his best lessons come when he's in the UNIX lab. He talks about everything from fork() to how we should take our kids out of the public schools and teach school in the churches.

Oh, and I just saw a guy drive by on a motorcycle with what looked like a saddle blanket between him and the seat of the bike. The excitement never ceases.

It was even longer than antidisestablishmentarianism, which is commonly regarded as the longest word in the English language. Marching band is going grrrrrrreat! Dr. Root picked a great staff for us this year. They're even doing good (IMH/AO) at problem-solving. Dynamic. Just what leaders should be.

I might've titled this post "Please pass the milk", but that's already been used. You see, I ran out of milk here at work and I have all this cereal calling my name.

A real quick post 'cuz I gotta run here in a sec.

Today was a once in a lifetime experience for me: I got to play for the VFW National Convention with the combined WSU Wind Ensemble/Ogden Concert Band at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, for which the keynote speaker was the Commander in Chief of our nation's armed forces. After he spoke he came down and shook my hand...along with a few hundred other peoples'. But still - it's not every day you get to shake the President's hand.

Quite the start for a week of band camp. Things there are looking interesting. Fewer people, but my main concern is that I'll enjoy all the music we're going to play. I have never been a fan of rock tunes as main show material, but I guess I'll just have to rewrite the stock parts to be kickin'.

Last Saturday I got the CD of Thenami's show music and wrote the tenor and bass parts for the opener. (Actually I have a few measures to change for the bass part still, but it's basically done.)

Question: Does anybody know how to edit comments. In essence, there's, apparently, a new wave of spamming where the people put the spam your blog as a comment and I would like to know how to get rid of it. Any ideas?

Guess what? I got a work study job at the Utah Museum of Natural History! Wooo Hooo!!!! And last night was just fun. There were four busts for alcohol and whatnot in my area and I had to assist on a possible marijuana bust. Fun times. So, now I'm really tired because I was forced to stay up 'til 3 am last night no thanks to the rule breaking. But despite stupidity like that, I am really really enjoying being an RA. I have really good kids living on my floor. They're all pretty nice and respectful. I'm too tired to think of anything else to write here.

I jump the band wagon and join the crowd. I'm so ready for school to start. I have the coolest class. At least that's what it looks like it'll be. I mean, its Dinosaurs and Fossil Record. It looks down right up my alley, but then again, its a 1020 class and might be filled with idiots and stupid heads. And if you know me, I see (hate) dead (stupid) people.

Hava and I met Orson Scott Card and his wife last night. It was awesome. If anyone wants to help me gloat, they can ask to see my two personalized and autographed books that Mr. Card signed for me. He's quite an awesome guy from the 2 hours I saw him in allowed me to see.

We've decided that Mofia will be our preferred game of the year. The optimal size of the group being 8 to 10 players and a narrator, expect Hava and I to be hosting quite a number of these events in the months to come. And, as we all learned on Tuesday, bring your thinking caps and your strategery and we'll have a greatness time. We'll also be much about clamping down on the whole 'Dead people can't talk' rule; much to the fun of all of us!

Anyway, Mr. Card (being a fantasy writing mormon that he is) has inspired me, so I'm off to fill more pages with my fantastical prose. Tootles all!

In other news: my world as an RA offically begins today with early-bird check in. I am both excited and nervous to start this new chapter in my education. There is A LOT of information that was given to myself and fellow RAs over the last ten days and it seems a bit daunting, but just as with any other job, I suppose you get the hang of it after a while. Any way, time to be gettin' myself back to work.

This last week and half has been extremly...well fullfilling, i shall, for everyones knowledge, be returning to our lovely home of ogden on friday, but i will not be returning to marching band or symphonic band this year...circumstances beyond my control are forcing me to quit music....for the time being.

For all you demolition derby fans, I have the info about the Les Schwabb Demo Derby at the Davis County Fair. To get there, take State Street in Farmington west over I-15. You'll go past the Davis County Sheriff's Department (they teach HAM radio classes there) and you can't miss the fairgrounds on the left. Parking is free. It should be really fun!

Bad News......

The University to which we all attend, mostly, in it's infinite wisdom, decided last May that instead of finalizing the purchase of our new uniforms on time to have them for homecoming, delayed an ENTIRE MONTH!!!!! YEA FOR UPPER STINKING MANAGEMENT!!!!!
Right now, projected SHIP date is 11/12/2005.
Matt and I are livid!!!!! Dr Root is taking it to the Pres of the Univ, to see if we can get extra funding to ship faster (even though 165 days from order is ridiculous to make and ship 150 or so uniforms).
If that doesn't work, we're gonna yell reAlly REALLY REALLY LOUD at the stupid people who take too dang long to make stinking uniforms. I REFUSE TO ALLOW THE BAND TO MARCH IN CAT EXCRAMINT!!!!!!!!!

People with rubber necks should be ticketed? The last time I checked, the only humanoid beings known to possess rubber necks are crash test dummies (like Buster from Mythbusters) and I suppose they probably could do with a few driver improvement courses. Y'know, crashing into barriers at 40 mph isn't usually a good thing, especially for the airbags which have to come out of their nice warm steering wheels and dashboards just to keep the dummies' heads from exerting 108G's on the driver controls.

Okay, I have to comment on something. Kristin and I tried the restaurant on Harrison called Jasoh (pronounced jay-SOH.) The food there was excellent, but a bit on the pricy side. I had a filet mignon that had an MSRP of $31.00. However, since I had a birthday coupon, that knocked 25 bucks off the sticker price. Kristin had a really good chicken breast covered in this amazing sauce. The crab cakes were pretty good too. Our waiter's name was Trevor and he was the most laid-back waiter I have ever seen. I really enjoyed the service. They do offer cooking classes at Jasoh which run through the summer at a price of $40 or $55 with wine. I don't know about you, but I don't drink wine, thank goodness, but it sometimes is nice to cook with. Though I would have a hard time cooking with a 1908 vintage wine commanding a price of some $40K per bottle. This wine can be had at a certain hotel in Las Vegas. Jasoh also offers such desserts as Tiramisu (though it's best to have this dessert at someone's house who knows how to make it without making it laden with alcohol.) All in all, however, my experience at Jasoh was a good one. It sits atop the list of restaurants I have visited this month (seeing as the only other restaurant I have visited this month was Arby's.) No, seriously, it was a very good restaurant. Highly recommended.

Oh, yeah, they also have a wildberry lemonade that is really quite tasty, but you have to ask for it specifically.

Oh yeah, I watched a little movie the other day called "The Fifth Element." Strange movie, to be sure, and kind of a cliche (hopeless situation about saving the world) but I did like the stylization used in it and the music. Plavalaguna was cool.

A sound editor for the Mac? Hmmmm. I'm kind of surprised that Audacity doesn't work because it's an open-source project that's originally built for flavors of *NIX, which MacOS X is a part of. The only sound editor that I've ever used is Cool Edit Pro which is now an Adobe product and it's definitely not free. You might try looking on pure-mac.com for some software. I'm not really savvy about audio software too much. Image software is a different story, but even there I have a very nice little set of tools I like (MS Image Composer, Fireworks, etc.)

A new week dawns...

...literally, if you look out my office window this time of the morning.

Welcome back, Andrew!! Long time no hear, er something like that. ;) I hope that your move-in was pleasant and fairly uneventful (as in injuries, deaths, dismemberments, etc.) Oh, and by the way, happy birthday (a few days late.)

So, I spent the weekend in Heber City at Kristin's grandpa's property. We went there to spend time with him and to ride the horses. I was really excited to ride, but soon after starting, I realized that I was in a bad situation. My horse, Raindance, was a bouncy horse and I had the saddle from hell. It was a very uncomfortable hour or so. My legs felt like they were being twisted right off at the knee and I bounced all over on the way down the hill. Raindance also has this thing about being in the lead. If he's not in the lead, then he freaks out and tries to run to get in the lead. When you're as inexperienced as I am at riding horses, it kind of freaks you out when the horse decides to run. So needless to say, I don't think that Raindance was very happy with me at the end of the ride because I kept pulling on his reigns to slow him down. I think, based on this experience, that I'm better at controling poorly-tuned motorcycles than horses. But, if I have a better saddle, I'm more than willing to give it another try. It's funny getting off the horse when you're not used to it because your legs feel like Jell-O under you. :)

Also, during the weekend, we had to wash the horses. Oh my word, that's a funny sight. Kristin simply grabbed the horses by the halter in one hand and sprayed them with a hose in the other hand. The horses hate being sprayed and so the run around in a circle trying to get away from the hose. Spraying their face is really funny too. The monster horsefly that kept bugging us was not so funny. They make the horses jump around because they hurt when the bite.

On a geeky note, I did get a full Unix system running on my Windows machine last Thursday. No, this is not Linux and it's not virtual machine. It's a project called Cygwin and it's a port of most packages available to Unix over to the Win32 platform. It's so complete that I can run a full X desktop on Windows. One thing to note: because it's not native Unix, Cygwin may not be as stable as, say, SVR6, or BSD/OS.

In other news, I have finally gotten around to editing the second episode. It's about 1/2 way done so far. Expect it early next week. When the regular school kicks in we should also be adding a Morning Show (or is it Mourning Show?) hosted by Jessica, Hava, and Suzanne. Andrew has also agreed to be our field agent and shoot us audio content from the far-away and most magical land of That School Down South But Not That Far South. Bling bling, as it were.

Diegs, you have my most sincere empathies for your (pardon the pun) current plight. I've woken up to the sound of dripping water in my room before and it's not that fun to be flooded.

On the other hand, Flood is one of TMBG's best albums, both by my own opinion and popular concensus as evidenced by the retail sales figures.

And speaking of music, 4 or 5 drum peoples will be driving to Park City this evening to for to hear an concert extraordinaire: Close Encounters of the Percussive Kind. Should be rockin'.

Besides, its almost the start of fall semester when we let in dozens of unsuspecting freshman to the randomness and insanity that is the paradise we know as the band hall.

Meeting People...

...often results in great surprise.

So I went to OCB on Wednesday and was very surprised to run into Lena! I was really happy to see a familiar (and younger) face there at OCB. Not that I don't know practically everyone there, but no one would really qualify as my peer in that group if it weren't for Lena being there. I was happy. :)

Also, I discovered that Kristin and I have a familiar new neighbor. Yeah, yesterday when I got home from work, I was putting some stuff in my trunk and who should pull out of her parking stall at Christopher Village but Kristen Vesper! I was really surprised to see her there. I seriously didn't know anyone there other than Kristin's swing dance friends (and the people in my ward who live there, too.) It was really fun to see Kristen. So yeah, we'll have to have a party. :)

I know this is for Band Geeks and not just necessarily Weber State band geeks (current or former) but it's hard to say thumbs upwards when none of us know him (as far as I know).

thanks for the NWS info. If only they knew. So Tiffanie and I got a washer and a dryer on Tuesday as we watched the storm move in. I started hooking it up but got tired and stopped. We were going to watch the cool lightening and stuff. Dr. Keipp called and delayed us for a moment. While I was on the phone, Tiffanie informed me of a bit of water entering our door (for those that don't know, we live in a basement.). The little bit of water kept increasing exponentially. We also noticed water coming in our washroom window (which eventually busted out due to water). Where is this story going you ask?? In the end, there was 5-6 inches of dirty, leafy water covering every lower corner of our apartment. Luckily for us, the elders quorum quickly came and helped get our stuff to dry ground. Also to thank- Lena, Aaron and Kristen also came to our aid with two towels (they did do more than that though). Thanks guys!! So if anyone wishes to find us, we are at my parents until further notice. Thanks and have a grand day (hopefully dry).

Exciting Rainstorm

Uh, yeah. Severe weather would be a good description. I was out in it all! Kristin and I decided to take a drive last night and watch the storm as it rolled in. Wow! What a cool cloud display! It was sweet. Then as the storm gathered over us, we realized that this was going to be a real drencher. The raindrops were pounding relentlessly against the top of our car and virtually rendering the wipers useless.

We decided to go over to the institute and check on Kristin's sister who is an EFY counsellor. Normally she'd be fine, but she decided to ride a motorcycle to EFY this week and we didn't want her to try to ride in such a storm. When we got to Harrison, it was a river. There must have been between four and six inches of running water on the street. I was sending up plumes of water from both sides of my car driving down the street. Water was seriously coming down in sheets. It was great! It reminded me of rainstorms on my mission in Texas where it floods every time it rains. Although this storm was considerably slower than real desert thunderstorms, it was impressive nonetheless.

Now, for all you Windows XP/2003 modders out there...

I found a great website where you can download icon sets, skins, and even themes or visual styles. The site is CrystalXP.net. If you want to install a visual style, you will first need a UX Theme Multi-patcher to patch your uxtheme.dll file so that you can install non-Microsoft themes on Windows XP/2003. Email me if you would like a copy of the UX Theme Multi-patcher. (j s c h i l l [at] w i n t o o l s [dot] c o m) My theme currently looks like the included picture: kind of a subtle replacement of the original Windows XP Luna look with a more glassy, shiny look, complete with a Tux penguin as the Start button. :) Another good site to visit if you're modding Windows is Everaldo.com. Everaldo Coelho is the graphic artist who brought us the awesome crystal icon set used in many Linux distros. He makes some of the best-looking icons in the industry.

Also, for any of you wishing to try out Linux, I have good news for you (at least if you have a broadband connection and a nice CD burning suite.) Visit Slax to download a very nice copy of a very nice pocket operating system. There are various flavors of Slax to try out. Download the ISO and then burn it to a CD using the "Burn ISO Image" option on your CD burning software. Once you have the CD burned, you can simply boot the computer off the CD and you'll be off and running Linux in no time. The best part is that it is a live CD which means that it won't mess up your Windows installation already on your hard drive. It'll just run off the CD (or out of RAM if you use the copy2ram option when booting.) Special thanks to Tim Mikesell for pointing this great flavor of Linux out to me.

Just finished my final for CS 4780 Advance Windows Programming (C#). Going to work on my last homework assignment and my group project for a bit. Jinglesthula: The Game is coming along nicely. I'll soon have an update ready for Ben the Beta-tester. Diazinon has quite a kick. I read two books in 5 days, and I'll start on HP6 after my class ends on Wednesday.

The World Stops at My Door on Saturday at Noon

So, right now I'm blogging despite the stream of people coming through my door. I get annoyed at the Parade of Procrastinators (as I call them) that wait until the last minute and then fill up the room so that we have to create a waiting list and everybody has to wait and I don't get to go home on time. GRRRR!!!

On another note, Welcome Home Lena! The Welcome Home Lena! party was fun, despite the not knowing of the rules for catchphrase and the shortly funny thumb movies. Greek chocolates were good as well as the chocolate pie. MMMMMMM!!!!!

Merry Christmas!

It is currently Christmas today where I work. Yesterday it was Halloween and tomorrow it could be Thanksgiving...who knows. :)
Major props to Cory for the bunny laughter. Even though I could not hear it, it still made me chuckle. It's a good thing, laughter is. I am currently at work and would rather be at home sleeping. My new puppy has volunteered his bark to be my new alarm clock every morning before my actual alarm goes off. This morning he wouldn't stop at that. Once he woke me up, he crawled all over me and covered my face with puppy kisses. Gross, I know, but he's so cute! So, back to work. I need to vent the importance of communication amongst co-workers. I work as an aide to an autistic child at a child-care facility. He has to have a specific schedule and well, it hasn't been followed this summer. The people in charge of the summer program are wonderful at suprising me every day with things that they are doing that my person cannot do. It screws up his schedule and wastes his time. Grrr. Like right now the kids are lining up to go to a golf camp. Thankfully someone is staying behind so I don't have to take my person to a hot golf course to stand around for an hour. So, who's excited to go back to school? (those of us that didn't take summer classes) I have been dreading it all summer, but have recently decided that it's time to go back. My keyboard is shaking and it feels like an earthquake...but I'm sure it's just the building. Ok, if you haven't noticed by now, I'm bored and have nothing important to write about. Marching Band 2005!!!!!!

Hey all!
It's been too long!!! But I have news about marching band 2005!!!!
We've ordered a ton of new music for the pep band folders including, but not limited to....
99 red balloons, Boogie Down, Back in Black, Wipeout, The Flintstones, Kung Fu Fighting,
Final Countdown, and Tear the Roof Off the Sucker!!!!!
Our show will not be finalized until band camp comes round. We will be mixing and matching music written by Daigo, and other pieces that have been ordered.
Olympic Spirit, America(from West Side Story), Somewhere(WST also, and more specifically for homecoming), Don't Rain on My Parade, Come Sail Away(Styx, the band, not the myth), and Jungle Boogie.
Band camp will begin on the 22nd, and we will be quite disrupted on Mon and Tu of that week due the Veterans of Foreign War Conference that members of last springs Wind Ensemble and the Ogden Concert Band will be performing at.
It is going to be an awesome season, and our first home game is Sept. 3rd,(two weeks after we start). No, we will not be performing at half-time, Roy HS marching band will be performing the first movement of their show, and playing with us in the stands.

Also, my wife and I have begun to breed again, and she is due in January. More, LATER!!!!

I wish i could have been to your open house but worked called and i had to answer! It sucks missing out on all of the things going on with you all but luckily i will be making up for it in aug when i move up to old ogden and live in the lap of luxury....not! By the way, Longhorn looks interesting. But Project Looking Glass is already released and I'm sooooo installing it when I finally get a laptop. You can check out the "demo" version on a windows platform and see the nice panaramic workspace (and you thought multiple desktops in KDE was nifty) and get all convinced that you need to run Linux for reals. At least seeing that convinced me.

WBHR episode 2 has been recorded and I'll probably start editing it together soon. Hopefully it should be up by the weekend.

Creativity, motivation, and litarariness

Many thanks to the Jon for the list of information. I'll be using this at length and in depth at heighth and at times (using 4 demensions! way to go me!). This definitely sparks the creative juices that flow, flow, ever so slow, into greater speed and capability. Again, many thanks.

I pity all those that rushed out to buy up that book. I feel so horrible that so many gads of people so highly anticipated so many pages of such poorly written fantasy. My only suggestion is to follow it up with something that is well written, so that your journey into the literary world isn't stunted and your growth limited. Might I suggest:
Lord of the Rings (if you're reading Harry Potter and have never read this, FOR SHAME!)
Chronicles of Narnia (if you're reading Harry Potter, you obviously need a lower reading level)
Pridain Chronicles (Gurgy could beat up that weird dwarfy thing Harry has any day)
Anything by Orson Scott Card (he's even LDS)
The Shanara Series (some of the best fantasy out there)

Updates to the band photo album

Hey, hey, hey!

Kristin and I recently got a really nice scanner for scanning photos and so I have been putting it to good use. I currently have a huge project of scanning a lot of pictures from our wedding and stuff for putting into a digital photo album, but I have been able to finish up with quite a bit of new band photo album content!

The new content that I have posted is: Jon's Birthday Party, Ben's Birthday Party, more Spokane pictures and Louisiana pictures from our NCAA trip, and more marching band pics from '03. I still have to scan and upload more pictures from our Days of '47 Parade appearance, but I need to find them first. I also have to scan still many pictures from Taiwan. (I think I have about a hundred of my own left to scan.) I also have a bunch of analog-turned-digital pictures of Tim and Amy's wedding reception that I can post, but I want to really get their permission first.

Anyhow, I just wanted to let you know about the updates. ;) Check the Band Photo Album link to the left (<--).

Also, I created a "Families" category on the photo album so if any of you have pictures of you and your family, submit them to me and I'll get them posted for all to see!

Ricky, you guessed correctly on 3 out of 2. I should've specified about his first Academy Award. I was thinking just his first award in general, which is Fiddler, but I did say "his music" which would set Jaws as the correct answer.

Ok, so John Williams won his 1st Academy Award in 1972 for his adaptation of the music for Fiddler on the Roof but that was in the category of Best Original Song Score and/or Adaptation not Best Original Score..... and so, through my extensive research, the 1st Academy Award that he won for Best Original Score was for the movie Jaws in 1975. And the 1st Golden Globe he won was also for the movie Jaws in 1975.

So there you have it, nothing to do + the internet = the answers to Band Geeks Radio's "free stuff" segment

In other news, I'm late for a class, but still blogging. And for a change I'm blogging from a station down in the lab rather than in my office.

Incidentally venture capitalists are now poised to invest ca. $100,000,000 in podcasting. Geek News Central had a pretty good idea on a podcast-based custom news service that might net some of that dough. Fascinating. And podcasting's only been around for about a year now.

Well, look forward to the first pcast-only unofficial internet radio station coming straight outta Weber State. Ben, we'll have to get together sometime and record the material. I already did test pilot episode zero today. Oranges from TMBG's clock radio provided the music.
