Here is a transcription that I wrote from things I heard in the Band Hall one day, many moons ago. Really. It was all said. In one sitting. No, I really didn't add anything, this was all you guys!

So, who do you practice kissing with?
I usually start laughing.
Is that why you want up front?
Excuse me! This isn’t Jazz Band!

I didn’t know the director of the C.I.A. had a piano.
It’s an expensive choice anyway.
So now, I’m, like, twice as fast because I have two hands.
His voice is just making me want tot sleep.
The tissue that moves water down – that’s the Floam?
Why is it “snowplow” and not “sn-owe pl-oh?” Oh!
Dude! I didn’t even have to try! It happened all by itself.

I know, the star was in the middle and it doesn’t even do anything. The star just falls.

And I thought the needle broke off in my arm…

Every morning when my son wakes up, he sits in bed and talks to his stuffed animals is basically just happy. I have sneaked over to his bedroom door a couple of times and just watched him through the crack just because he is so cute to watch. He tells his animals stories and everything. So, I got the idea that this behavior needed to be filmed before he grows out of it. So, Kristin and I decided to set up a web cam on a tripod next to his crib and at 7:00 in the morning, it would start recording. I just set up the web cam this evening and programmed a macro to start recording at 7:00 in the morning. This will happen every day until we get some good footage. The only regrettable thing is that the web cam really isn't very good at capturing motion. It is more like a security camera than an actual video camera. The video it takes is not crisp 24FPS video. So, if anyone has a nice USB-capable video camera that they could lend to a noble cause, please let me know.

So, I decided to blog today and I sort of spewed this out. I figured it could be more thoroughly appreciated here rather than on my own blog. Enjoy!
I eagerly await the release of... can you guess? Well, if you guessed Star Trek.... you're WRONG! New Moon, perhaps? Nope! Wrong again. Go on, keep guessing. Transformers? GI Joe? Nope, all wrong.
Yes, I am waiting for the release of, none other than, Jinglesthreela. Sooth, filming wrapped up many moons ago, but, alas! The iMac was theivered so post-production ground to a halt with the faint swishing sound of a lost laptop. But, what's this?! Hark, I hear the faint call of hope as the Jarrett runs, metaphorically speaking, screaming down the halls, I have it backed up! Hooray!
But, the Progress! What news is there of the Progress??!!!!
To that, there are simply crickets chirping into the night.
However, to staunch the life-threatening flow of curiousity gushing out from within us, the Jarrett did post a teaser on Youtube. To be fair, however, it didn't have any scenes from the forth-coming epic of Jinglesthreela. It was, in fact, the original Jinglethula. Not Jingles 2: The Sea Quail or Jingles the Pirate Goes Quantity Surveying. There's a big difference here. Mostly in the name.
As you can see, I'm a devout fan of the series. Hmmm..... think I should start sending fan mail to the actor who played monseur balloon? He was the best, for sure. But then, what if he has since been popped? I don't know what I'd do.... how could they so callously replace such an actor?

So, in conclusion, thus we see that rabbits will not generally hop in a straight line down the entire length of the band hall. Good Question.

Hello All,

I'm back again. Running down memory lane makes you crazy sometimes. I finally caved and starting using Facebook. I've been a very big MySpace fan up until I found that most of the people I really wish to connect with are on Facebook and not the other.

Dvorak Likes Linux!!

I'm doing a bit of a victory dance right now because John Dvorak has declared Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex "a winner." He wrote an entire column in PC Magazine raving about how Ubuntu has seemingly overcome the awkwardness of using Linux.

I have, just this week, been using Ubuntu 8.10 on my nine-year-old desktop PC and I must say that I am impressed, too. For most things, it works at least as well as Windows XP and I don't have to worry about malware. The eye candy factor of the user interface is, in my humble opinion, much better than that crap Microsoft has pushed on us with Windows Vista. Personally, I hate all the transparencies. They just make the system harder to use. Ubuntu includes some transparencies, but they are done so much more tastefully than in Windows Vista. The only thing that I have to complain about is that I am not able to edit video on it like I can with my XP machine. However, I'm sure that can be solved with some tweaks.

So, I have to agree with John Dvorak and wholeheartedly give my two thumbs way up for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. Go download a copy today. (Psst. It even installs in Windows, and I think there is a Mac installer, too.)

Hope for a Bright Future

As you may or may not know, I am a car buff. I love cars. I don't know how to work on cars very well, but I do love cars. The art, the style, the history, all these are factors to why I love cars. I am also a very red, white, and blue fan, meaning that I am extremely particular to American cars. No other country on earth has produced the kinds of cars that America has produced. Only America has made such icons as the Chevrolet Camaro, the Plymouth Barracuda, the Buick Riviera and the Ford Mustang. Sure, other countries have their cool cars. There's the Ferrari F-355, the Mercedes-Benz SLK 65 AMG (alphabet soup) and the Nissan Skyline, but these don't carry nearly the kind of nostalgia and embodiment of the American Dream like the great American automobile.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock lately, you know that General Motors and Chrysler LLC have requested (and were loaned) money from the government to allow them to restructure and avoid bankruptcy. The key component to this is the restructuring part. I'm not following Chrysler's restructuring plan very closely, but my I am keenly aware of the restructuring going on at GM.

The General's plan for restructuring is basic: trim off the parts that don't make money and capitalize on the parts that do. Good business plan. However, this is not without some sacrifice. It boils down to this: General Motors is letting go of SAAB, Hummer and Saturn. They are also redesigning Pontiac as to be a more enthusiast-only brand with a short product list. I'm not really sad to see SAAB and Hummer go, but I hope that Saturn does not cease to exist. I am a loyal Saturn owner. I have two Saturns each with well north of 100,000 miles on the clock and still ticking. They have had no major problems at all and continue to serve very well. My favorite, a white SL2 called Lizzy, has over 140,000 miles and it has no body rattles and it still fits tight. The thing that makes me passionate about Saturn especially is their history and early committment to America.

Saturn was conceived in the early 1980s as General Motors' clean-slate attempt at fighting the small import cars from Japan. GM already had some small cars, but they were clearly not as good as those offered by the Japanese. So, Saturn was spun off the parent company and given an all-new production facility in Tennessee. The cars they produced (S-Series GM Z-bodies) shared nothing with other GM products (though they looked a bit like 3/4-sized Oldsmobiles). They had a completely different philosophy to the assembly and to customer service than other cars. Saturn made sure that each and every customer felt like part of a family when they purchased a car or had one serviced. Not surprisingly, this won more than a few customers and caused ripple effects in the industry. There was even a time when a batch of S-Series cars were shipped with the wrong type of coolant in the engines. Saturn went to the customers and not only replaced the coolant, but replaced, at no charge, the entire car. They did this with about 1,200 cars.

While I am saddened by the decision by GM to expire Saturn, hopefully, the corporation can leave the parent and rediscover itself as the "Different kind of company." This can be a great time for Saturn. Hopefully, with a little customer support, they can emerge from this as a new American car brand.

Weber State University's football team is 5-0 in conference play. We won in Flagstaff today which means we go to the playoffs. I got to go with the band this time which was really cool. Hopefully I get to go if they travel again.

Northern Arizona... city of flagstaff is OK as cities go, not quite as interesting as Boulder... NAU facilities really nice (indoor football field... cool)... Northern Arizona geographically: really, really boring. Like southern Utah. Although caught just glimpses of the Grand Canyon walls, which reminded me of God's Window and the escarpment in Nelspruit (S.A.). Oh and the big shiny hydroelectric dam which forms Lake Powell is amazing too.

It's been a LONG time since I've blogged on here. So, I had a random thought come to mind and thought I would share it with you all.
So, here is my thought/question.
Has anyone ever thought about or done any kind of work/research on how weather affects musical instruments? And...if so, done anything about it to seriously educate musicians out there? I think I will make it my duty to become the first meteorologist with specialties in providing reports for musicians.
For example:
Monday- We will be expecting a cold front to come in from the south. Reed instruments, break out the harder reeds and prepare for your instrument to be a pain in the neck. Strings, your fingers will be colder, so wear gloves at all possible times and keep your fingers moving! And, be prepared for breaking strings. Etc....

Anyways...yay for random thought!

I have my wine boiled, and drink it cold with fuchsia juice. I have a good appetite, but I never speak while eating for fear of choking.
I breathe carefully (a little at a time). I dance very rarely. When walking I hold my sides and look straight behind me.
Very serious in demeanor, if I laugh it is without meaning to. I apologize all the time and quite affably.
I only close one eye when sleeping; my sleep is very sound. My bed is round, with a hole provided for putting the head through. Every hour my servant takes my temperature and gives me another.
I am a longtime subscriber to a fashion magazine. I wear a white hat, white stockings, and a white vest.
My doctor has always told me to smoke. To this advice he adds, "Smoke, my friend. If you don't, someone else will smoke in your place."

I mean, before anyone goes thinking that's not dangerous, consider that while those aren't really big bikes, they look like they probably weigh between 250 and 300 lbs. As I can't post on the IIIla page, I'll post it here.... I should be to the Browning Center tomorrow, around 10 AM, (well, actually, later today) with some props that might come in useful... namely a baby (should you choose to delve into Jingle's past to find out why he's now a pi-rat) and costumes consisting of Big black pirate pants (good with or without boots), knee high pirate boots (if anyone can fit into them). a white renaissance shirt, some wench-wear(includes two skirts, a corsette, a chemise & a vest, skirt thingy, both of which look really cool with the pants!), a couple ren-belts and belt-loops (black and brown) a sword/sheath/frog, a couple cheap rapiers, a black jedi cloak (technically a sith cloak, long enough for someone up to 6 foot 2), and a set or red jedi tabbards/belt and brown jedi tabbards & belt. Possibly my cheap brown jedi cloak, maybe a green ren shirt. Also, a nice piratey looking shirt and pants for the baby, just in case. I do have jackalope booties too... And a longbow without a string....
So there it is, hopefully with this advance warning you might be able to think of a way to utilize some of it, should you choose to do so. I'm happy to leave everything there (except of course, the baby) for use in later filming as well so long as it is all returned. :)

Less serious than my senior recital

is my band playing at Roy Days this weekend. Friday night from 7:30 until 9:30 is Classic Cheatwood, which means we'll be playing some songs you might be familiar with. Also, the group starting at 6 is pretty good too.
Saturday night from 6-8 is Cheatwood. This means that we'll be playing mostly originals, really jamming, dancy, and well-played music with some covers thrown in.
Bring a friend, date, nephew, niece, uncle, aunt, or anyone else you know or even don't know.

There's a full moon this friday night and so of course there's a hike in the works. I think it'd be way cool to do Mt. Ogden from the Snowbasin side (just a matter of ensuring we don't get gated in) as the light will be really strong there - the trail is quite wide and exposed, only about 4.5 miles, &c. Now hiking the east face means we can start earlier, around 6 or 6:30 we can meet up at the VBC and head out. I know that freaky people sometimes go up to snowbasin rd. on friday nights but I figure if we're actually on the trail (yes, cue Ferde Grofé) we'll have no trouble. As of now the weather is supposed to be good.

So that is my plan and I invite all interested parties to join me.

Kristin and I would like to somehow be involved this time in Jingles3la. As I remember, we were not able to be involved in JinglesIIla because we were getting hitched. Well, the hitching has been done and the sequel has been released. So, if there is anything we can do to be involved, please let us know. I'm not sure if we will be in attendence at the fireworks show on the 13th, but I think it would be fun to help out anyway.

So here's the current plan. I think just about everybody is going to be at the lindquist plaza (read: "duck pond") concert and fireworks, given how many are playing at it; and so I suggest:
-that a Jingles3la meeting be held then and there, between the fireside and concert, with games and snacks of course - and possibly somebody's laptop and DVDs to catch up those who don't know Jinglesthula.
-that a camera be brought because a free crowd scene with fireworks is a beautiful and useful thing. I mean, we could do anything with that.
-also, that a few simple props be around
-that we feed Matt Kinney 100% nut-free cookies.
-that this great opportunity not be missed.
My usual statement will be repeated: I plan on being very close to the seating area for the concert; look for either a South African flag or the Jingly Roger flying proudly. Or listen for the sound of didgeridoos. Whatever.

Also for anybody interested we're gonna busk in SLC on saturday night - it's the Jazz festival - probably on 4th south someplace.

Coming to Corps Encore? Of course we'd love to have you on the project. The more the merrier. You want to be a villain again? Jon, give me a list of emails of those who post on the blog so the notifications and access to the new jingles3la blog can be more universal.
There are two possibilities. One, we have a meeting after (during?) Corps Encore - I guess that's tomorrow; or this Saturday night (at Jon's or the planetarium); or Sunday afternoon while waiting for the fireworks show &c &c. If you can (this goes for everybody) attend any such events and we will begin the process.

BK recording tonight, Troopers tomorrow

If anybody is interested, the Blue Knights will be recording tonight at the stadium using the IsoMike and the Troopers will be there tomorrow. Actually, if I remember right, they do it around dusk, before the lights come on in the stadium so that there is no buzz but I don't know the exact time they'll be doing it. I heard that they let people sit in the stands during the recording that BK did last year so I don't see why it would be any different this year but if you go and they don't let you in, I'm sorry.

Also, the Blue Knights are currently over at Roy High. Usually all drum corps rehearsals are open rehearsals but every once in a while, there is a closed one. But from what I heard from the dad of a kid in BK, it's an open rehearsal.

Saturday, July 5th, there will be festivities at Jon's pad.

Thus far, there will be the watching of a live drum corps webcast from Stanford, CA (which starts at 6:30 p.m. in CA so 7:30 here) as well as watching whatever other drum corps shows we want to get us hyped for Corps Encore. Oh and I do mean whatever shows we want! I signed up for the DCI Fan Network which has streaming video of all the top 12 drum corps from 1975 to 2006 plus a ton of other features. Plus, from what it sounds like in Jarrett's post, there will also be the hazing of some Band Hall newbies.... excuse me, we will be "indoctrinating" some newer Band Hall citizens. Should be tons-o-fun!

Plan on it starting at 6 p.m. Jon and I talked earlier today and suggested pizza (just like $5 pizza from Little Caesars) and snacks. Jon said that he'd provide the drinks. If ya got any questions, you can ask either Jon or myself and maybe Jarrett?

Saturday, 5 july is a good time for an evening get-together of some kind. No less an authority than Jingles the Pirate himself told me so and also informed me that other(s) had suggested getting together to watch drum corps videos in order to get warmed up for Corps Encore on Thursday the 10th. I also am attempting to assemble a cadre of Band Hall citizens to be indoctrinated in the glorious traditions and lore of the Band Hall, i.e. Jinglesþula. Jon has suggested his place as a facility (though I don't mean to speak for him!) which would be good... hmm.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

So Tuba Christmas is a great event that quite a few tuba and euph. players look forward to each year. They gather in masses every year to play Christmas carols and to just have a good time playing some low, soothing tunes.

Well for any of you that be interested, there's a hike in the works. It's an alternative 4th of july activity: the plan is to hike Malan's peak (a fairly gentle hike) in the evening so as to be able to see all 8 or so major fireworks shows at once. So we're leaving the browning center at 6 pm, from the W lot, and all are welcome to join us. If you wish to have access to the games/events calendar, just email Jon or I and we'll get you in on the action!

Otherwise, you have absolutely no excuse to have anything less than a great day.

Why hello to all.... It seems as though another year of marching is upon us. I find myself this year in quite the interesting position. Being the assistant director at Roy HS I now find myself in more administrative and overseeing tasks than hands on teaching and running of the band. Not sure he chose the right guy for this, but I guess we'll see.

For y'alls info, Roy HS has acquired all-new uniforms. We will hopefully be debuting these beauts at either the 24th parade or Roy days. So make sure you catch the train.

I know I'm a geek cuz all I ever talk about are computers, band or my family, cuz my kids are quite adorable.

I miss being up there with you guys. Ah, the memories!

May 21st was a great day for me! Well, it was great for Kristin and me. We had the distinct privilege of welcoming our son, Jayden, into the world! I don't have a whole lot to say other than I am so happy and so overwhelmed all at the same time. I will continue to post more images as I get a chance to shrink them from 8.3MP to a more manageable, Internet-friendly size.

In other news, with all the relative downtime this weekend, I have been able to get my email server up and running. It's kind of a headache setting up a mail server, but I got it running!

For those of you who don't want to jump and read, here's the skinny. You have a GPS enabled phone (or phone with GPS device attached). You download the game software. You select a mission. You go to the various checkpoints, following the clues. There are riddles and gold to collect along the way and photo tasks. It's fun. Probably.
